I once took a 1.8m PF dish down to the south of France tied on to the roof bars of my then estate car. According to the handbook of my current car the width between door mirrors is 2.09m. That would mean an overhang of 10cm or so each side so I reckon it would be a goer to do it that way.

I have a 2012 Vito with a full roof rack just not sure about securing it with the overhang

Would one use ratchet straps for example?

I've got a 1.2m dish to pick up, that might just save me paying the bridge toll!

I've moved several 1.8m dishes around. Always used the trailer. Came to the conclusion that it is very helpful to drill 4 holes in the edges of the dish and through those holes screw 2 wooden planks. When planks are attached it becomes very simple to handle antenna even alone. When use wooden planks the dish will never be warped during transportation. I think that those planks can also help to fix the dish on the roof of the car. Example on the attached picture.
Dishes up to 1.2m easily go inside the car, including SMW-OA-1600.

When I collected the 2.2 from Moonbase I found a trailer and a couple of ratchet straps very useful.

When I collected my 1.8 I clamped two ladder sections to the roof bars to give a much larger flat platform for the dish to sit on. Then just rope and a couple of straps to hold it in place.

Although I have ratchet straps available to use I would still use ropes to tie the dish to the roof rails - as I did all those years ago. I feel that I can get more control over the tension on the ropes.

I was surprised by how little the dish affected the driving dynamics to be honest. Providing it doesn't flap it's quite neutral to the handling.

Having said that I would take it easier with a 2.3m compared to the 1.8m!

I had to look up what the Vito is like and it looks like quite a tall vehicle so it could be a struggle to get it up on top and tied down securely. A few stepladders would be advisable. It also looks quite wide which would be an advantage though.

The width of the top of my head is around 1.9m so you are looking at overhang by 200mm each side, that put me off initially

Also is there not a risk of over tightening with ratchet straps and warping the dish or am I overthinking it?

I tied a 6m scaffold pole to the roof on one of my classic cars. Also did the same with a kingsize mattress!IMG_3388.jpg

My CM180 transport, wood beams strapped to roof rack, spaced to distribute load \ stress on dish when straps holding dish were tightened up, went very well > how far have you travelled to get a satellite dish?

...or use ladders as mentionned in post above, good idea.

But 2.30 may pose some problems relative to car roof width, may be ok. For a big metal dish, some large plywood board instead of beams to be sure of not warping anything ? And of course, so as to not kill anyone along or on the road, be 199% sure that it's all secured safe and solid (including the roof rack itself !!) Just some opinions, good luck.

Are the bars fixed to the top of the van or simple clip on ones? My experience is only with the type that run from front to back that "grow" through the roof and are really part of the car.

When tying the dish on (with ropes!) I make sure that I do diagonally more-or-less as tight as I can and any from side to side just tight enough to stop slippage. I also use the bits that go through the roof to anchor the dish against any fore or aft movement,

Or else use a courier to save all the hassle and stress. By the time you take out petrol costs and time its worth it.

Would you trust a courier, possibly a single man with a van to safely transport a one piece 2.3m dish without damage? The courier might have additional pickups and drop offs on route with the risk of other goods damaging the dish when being loaded/unloaded.

That depends who you use. I have used a few and the items are photographed before being loaded, therefore any damaged is down to them. But then if you use a one man band from from Gumtree on the cheap you may get problems. The seller of the 2.3 dish being purchased advised me to use a courier that he recommended.

In the event of damage in transit, I agree, the damage is down to the courier. However, the stress is all on you to get it sorted out and receive compensation for the damage.

In the case of "gap30" with the 2.3m DH dish, the distance to transport it is not that great. Fuel costs will be a lot lower than hiring a courier if time and a suitable vehicle are available.

What about hiring a van for half a day or a day, something with a high top or a Luton back?
I've had some really cheap vans from some local independent firms for a couple of hours use.
