KA Band Dish Sizes

I tried yesterday to put my ISS 1m dish fixed on 19.2°E Ka band (18ghz)

And got nothing at all, the tbs card resisted nothing. Put it temporarily on my 1.25 and I had enough signal.

Finally fitting it on my 1.5, 4° of prime. And is working really well.

Then I tried to put the 21ghz ku/ka lnb on the ISS 1m and yes it can tune in the ka band with a very strong signal, but the picture keeps braking up and is unwatchable.

So what is a real world size of dish needed for watchable ka?

Or is my ISS 1M a poor performing dish?

I only use my 1.5. That's the best I can make out with, though bigger would be better I suppose.

For me, the Triax TD88 is adequate for 99% of the currently available Band D channels from 16E, 7E and, when active, the feeds from 5E. That's with the Inverto Ka/Ku LNB., or the XMW.

For Band A Newsnet feeds on 19E, the Triax 1M is fine, particularly now using the Hughes LNB - subjectively a better performer than my Norsat Band A LNB.

The Hughes lump goes on the TD88 when sniffing for anything available on Band B or, at a stretch, the lower regions of Band C.

Chris, I'm surprised you don't have a lot of luck with a 1M on 19E, it's usually OK for Newsnet on my TD88, except for a few of the weaker feeds.

I have a td88, & a copy td88 I could try them also. I haven't given up yet with the 1m as its only news net I am really after.

I was also wondering if any one else had used ISS dishes for ka band, and if so the comments.

Is the ISS dish solid or perforated? Ka doesn't work on perforated dishes due to wavelength size - it just disappears through the holes.

Its possible the feed is mismatched to the dish Chris ..
Resulting in poor illumination.
Though I would expect ..something on a 1m ..?
Llew gets away with a TD88 on account it is a very good match ...and is less fringe than you or I ..
what channels were you trying for specifically ?
if channels on Ka D ...then you should get results on 7E with a 1M ....but 16E could indeed be tricky..

News channels ..KaA would be extremely borderline..on a 1M..though the Racing feed should be do-able

I had intended the 1m to act as a "newsnet" dish on 19.2°E

Yes I do get a very strong signal with the ka/ku lnb on 7°E only thing with that is my dr hd just keeps pixelating and makes it unwatchable. But I suspect there is another problem with the box it's self.

When I have a few hours I will go and have a tweek with the dish and lnb, and see what I can do.

You mean with the KaKu LNB? It's the feedhorm that's part of the LNBF. For the XMW LNB, I use a feedhorn removed from an Inverto Saorsat LNB.

On the 1M dish, I use an XMW FD9000 feedhorn on the Hughes LNB., the one Feedsat points to. An excellent match.

Feedsat should be able to help with the details from that site Chris. Mine came from XMW in Korea when we ordered the XMW LNB.

@Chris1979 : if you need help to order the ka source, let me know in private, I can help you, the manager of this online shop is a good friend and a real professional (maybe the last we have in France) not a box reseller....
