New Delhi: The divide between the Karunanidhis and Marans seems to be getting wider with the DMK deciding to launch its own TV channel pitted against Sun TV network.
Breaking off from Sun TV, which is owned by the Maran family, the DMK has decided to launch its own television channel called Kalaignar TV – as DMK patriarch and Chief Minister M Karunandihi is popularly called – in collaboration with Raj TV.
The new channel will be launched on June 3, coinciding with the birthday of Karunanidhi. The DMK party symbol "rising sun" is expected to be the logo of the channel.
The decision to launch this new channel seems to be taken after Sun TV-owned newspaper Dinakaran had published a survey which claimed that 70 per cent of the people favoured Karunanidhi’s younger son MK Stalin as his political heir while only two per cent pitched for Azhagiri.
According to reports, the paper published the survey despite Karunanidhi's strong disapproval, and it triggered sharp differences among members of the DMK's first family.
Former union minister Dayananidhi Maran was brought into the party just ahead of the 2004 Lok Sabha elections after his father, Murasoli Maran’s death in late 2003.
He contested successfully from Central Madras Lok Sabha seat and was made a Cabinet minister and was given a plum portfolio.
He functioned as DMK's man at the Centre and interacted with the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi on behalf of Karunanidhi.
Media war
On whether the channel would adopt a pro-DMK stand, Raj TV Managing Director M Rajendran told PTI, "We'll function in the same manner the Sun TV functioned before."
He said the management had got the approval of Karunanidhi to name the channel after him.
The channel, which would provide a wholesome entertainment along with regular news bulletins, would be launched shortly, he added.
The fallout of the rift between Karunanidhi's family and Chairman and Managing Director of Sun Network, Kalanidhi Maran, and his brother, former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran, which led to the latter's resignation from the Union Cabinet, was being felt by Sun TV.
It was denied rights in the last minute to telecast a rally organised to mark Karunanidhi's golden jubilee year in state legislature.
The SUN TV crew were turned away from the venue and Raj TV was given permission to telecast the event, attended by a host of eminent personalities including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
It has been said in the political circles that Sun TV has held out an olive branch to the DMK but Karunanidhi is not relenting and has stepped up the war between the two families.
The Sun network has grown from being a single channel to a Rs 400-crore network in the last 10 years and experts say it’s this size that will see the network get through its difficult times.
