King of the sunflowers 2017

This was a bit of fun last year, so lets do it again. No prizes - apart from the kudos of growing the tallest sunflower on the forum.

I'll probably end up last again due to the short growing season up here

EDIT - Everyone is welcome to enter - its just a bit of fun with a bit of banter & something a bit different to do

You are far enough south the follow whatever planting instructions are on the packet. We have to wait till the soil & the weather warms up a bit in a few weeks time

Beginning of March/after the last frost I will be planting mine, then a few more late march/April, wise to start them indoors, the mice ate the seeds I planted outside last year

Well I have already planted mine on my window bottom, I am also using seeds from last year's heads, as I tend to lose a lot to slugs I have decided to plant 1 pot every every 10 days until mid March

Start my seedlings middle of March, sow in pots with damp compost, cover with clear poly bag corner clipped off, and place on top of the water heater/boiler, as soon as planlets appear move to cooler place and use LED grow lamps so they do not get leggy, plant out when frost free soil ( usually middle of May here ).

Ps Used the snowthrower today as fresh 15 cm snow this morning and -4C, 150 meter up to the mainroad ( joys of rural life central southern Norway )

I planted the seeds that came from my daughter's Christmas present (from 2015) a couple of weeks ago, nothing has broken through as yet.

But I did get a bargain last week with broad bean seedlings (if they are called that), so they've gone out on the roof as it is safer wrt slugs and I hope blackfly.

I planted my sunflowers out last weekend, if I waited until no sign of frost up here it could be May before they went outside. I will take a piccy soon

Up to now I have five Russian giant seedlings doing ok.The single giant seeds failed to germinate. Not surprising really it turned out that the use by date was 2014.I have six mongolian Giant seeds set to replace them.Should be good according to the packet they go to 14 foot.Piccys later.
