lan card /win 98 help

ive been trying to get my m8,s. 98 pc to work with lan card so he can update his dbox himself. lol
but im not getting the pc to show a local area connnection in networking
its showing as installed in devise manager but when you connect the box to it via lan cable nothing ive been through the install wizard but no luck

Are you using a crossover cable? If you're using a straight-through CAT5e cable directly, it wont work.

If straight-through, have you got a hub to test it via?

Can you perform the loop back test by pinging 127.0.0.1 with the cable unplugged??? This should test your device drivers.

Your connection should show up in the network folder though...
Try running the wizard again (and rebooting) if you had the wrong cable.

Regarding W98, thankfully I can't even remember what it looked like

i know the cards working its ok in xp machine yes its crossover. its the settup for 98 i cant get enabled ive tried the wizard loads of times and cant get the network box to appear in networking.
with xp its easy i just put the card in and it shows up
cant put xp on his pc its too old.
