I have a Dell inspiron 5150.

When I turn it on, I can hear it starting up, but then it just switches off. The power cable is attached and switched on.

It does not display any thing on the screen, just a blank screen.

I think my 4 year old might have given it a boot on the top'O'-red

It was coming on,(display on screen) then it would switch off. But its just got worse.

Any ideas where I can start looking for faults? As I think it`s hardware, not a software fault.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

Buy a proper laptop, Dells are pretty weak when it comes to minor bumps and bashes. If you're planning on repairing it yourself, you might want to try to find a repair manual, it would help you take it apart without breaking it even further. As for it's fault, it sounds as if the motherboard is damaged and probably needs a new one, but if that's the case it's often cheaper to buy a new laptop and sell the old one for spares (keep the old hard drive and put it in a USB caddy)...

Hmmmm......

Ok thanks for the reply, It didn't cost me anything, so maybe worth me paying to get it repaired.

How much do 2nd hand mother boards go for these?

Edit:

Just done a search on ebay, the 1st one I come across, same fault!

Boards can be either cheap or expensive depending on where you look, I personally never bought any myself as I had someone else do that for me, but going by your edit, it seems to be a common fault which is Dell's problem, but of course if you contacted them they'd give you as much bull as they could to keep you on the line only to tell you that they won't do anything or charge you a few £hundred for a repair job...

Its going to be a diy repair, not going to pay through the nose for one.

How sure are you its the main board?

Ill keep an eye out on ebay.;)

Not very... :D

When I repair laptops it's all trial and error, basically see if one thing fixes it, and if not try another, and if it's not that, tell the customer it's going to be an expensive job... :D
