large dish for asian sats ???

i have a C band receiver (Humax 8100) - i could get a C band LNB with
a motor, but i would like to be sure if it is possible at all from northern germany to receive ASIAN satellites like, PAS 7/10 (68.5 E), Telstar (76.5 E),
Thaicom 3 (78.5 E), Insat 2E (83 E), etc ?

footprints are available on lyngsat.com but i am unable to understand all
this ... please do inform me.

If you have an absolutely ideal horizon out to the south east, you may be able to get out to 75 East or a little more. In the easern UK we can theoretically see out to about 70E, then the satellites drop down below the horizon. To see which sats may be available to you, check the sat trackers on Lyngsat:

Pick a bird, and set your approximate location It will tell you whats going to be available if you have an ideal setting.

Warning - one or two of the birds locations are incorrect - Astra 2D was recorded at being at 7W yesterday!! :D :D

great to know that theoretically it should be possible to receive some asian
satellites from Hamburg (north-west germany). now, i checked again this lyngsat for footprints but as i mentioned before :) it is very difficult for me to understand all this technical terms ... so i'm pasting them for you perhaps
you'll be able to explain them to me in an easier way. here are some sats
which broadcast subcontinental channels in clear (whenever they come to europe though it becomes pay TV - annoying O-no) - please do let me know which ones are in realistic postion.

Azimuth is the angle from north the dish needs to be pointing at.

Elevation is the height above the horizon.

Inclination is the wobble the satellite has (normally insignificant unless its more than about 2 degrees, but even tiny wobbles can affect extreme fringe reception.)

Long & Lat is where you are of course.

So looking at your sats:



Insat 2E/3B at 83.0°E
Azimuth = 103.45°
Elevation = 1.44°
no chance as its almost on the horizon (an ideal horizon as if you were living on the coast with sea out to the south east.)

Thaicom 2/3 at 78.5°E
Azimuth = 107.24°
Elevation = 4.19°
Forget it - too low.

Telstar 10 at 76.5°E
Azimuth = 108.73°
Elevation = 5.26°
forget it too low.

PAS 7/10 at 68.5°E
Azimuth = 115.57°
Elevation = 9.79°
hmm may be if you have no hills / buildings or trees out to the south east

Intelsat 904 at 60.0°E
Azimuth = 123.34°
Elevation = 14.59°

theoretically possible

elevation is good.

OK now consider the target area of the footprints. Each sat has a specific area that is is designed to cover.

I know for starters Paksat 1 is out of range for you as the transmissions cover Pakistan!

The other thing to remember is that most of these asian services seem to be on C-band, and you need specialised equipment and a BIG dish - (absolute minimum 1.2m for strong c-band signals that are targetting Europe).

To be honest, I think you need to forget all these exotic satellites, and see what you can get off the European satellites.There a reasonable amount of Asian stations on 13E and 28E
