Would this be a good setup, for first timers ?

What do you think of the equipment ?

Your comments will help new and older forum users ;)

It's OK. Apparently it does the job. You get what you pay for, but it's certianly good value for a basic receiver (not that I have first hand experience).

Like all Lidl special offers, you will need to get there VERY early to bag one, i.e. queue up well befor opening time. Check to make sure that your local store will have them in stock before you go on Thursday morning!

Looks different from the Comag one they had a while ago, i have got one of these its a good receiver now i've updated its software

Does this new one have common interface slots behind a flap or is it just for free to air channels do you think, either way not bad for £50

their LNB's look fairly cheap for £4 anyhow

Just got back from Lidl, suprise, suprise!! loads of the FTA Comag SL-55 available. Nice neat unit with 2 x Scarts, SVHS, Optical audio O/P & LNB in/out all for £49.99.

The 80cm dishes also look OK for the price (£14.99) as does the LNB & Signal finder @ £3.99 ea.

The receiver is FTA only as no CI slot, but good value, even includes a scart to scart lead and batteries for the remote!

Typical someone suggests phoning up to check that they have them in stock(BGonaSTICK) and they dont seem to have any phones at their stores. Seems that trying to save every penny to make the good deals means that you dont get the luxury of checking stock before your arrival.

The EPG and even the now and next is only showing after pressing the epg Button. Also it needs to "lock" the signal and if none found goes back to the last shown channel or simply crashes. The signalmeter seems not to work, it shows about 50% signal and 0% quality on ALL satellites and stations. The tuner is extreemly unsensitiv, a signal I get no sweat with a humax5400 just produces a low or none signal message on the sceen.
That said, there is an EMU software for other models of this brand, so if there ever comes something this reciever would be a very nice deal indeed.
It looks quite good and is very small and for a simple Astra/Hot Bird setup perfect. I do not think its worth trying the motor, it got Diseqe 1.2, but its so unsensitive......
Still, I got 3 for the rental appartements here on the coast, and for that they do just dandy at 69 euros.

I read a thread last week about an offer at Lidl, as this looked like a cheap receiver for a noobie to 'play' with. I'd heard that they normally only have a few, so be there early to beat the rush.

I am no good at waking to an alarm so i thought 'I'll stay up on my computer all night' so I'm awake and won't miss this bargain. So I arrived at 5.30am, hoping to be first in line. I WAS, the next to arrive was a member of staff, who was unsure how many sets they had in. So I decided to stay put. At 8.38am!!!, the next customer arrived to queue, when I explained to her (an elderly lady) that she would not be able to receive any encrypted Sky channels, she got back in her car and went home. At 8.52am, yes 8.52am the next customer arrived (8 minutes before opening time). One other person arrived before opening time. They both came for this receiver.

I'd like to say that we all strolled in calmly, but just in case there were only 2 sets, I went charging down the aisles like a man possessed ( bearing in mind that both other people were the higher side of 60) I got there first and scrabbled to get the receiver, dish, lnb and the sat finder. Mission accomplished.

There were various piles of goods there, but I didn't pay any attention to what it all was, I'd got what I came for, so I paid and left.

At about 3pm (after being up for 31 hours) I fell asleep, only to be woken up again by the phone. The mother in law had phoned to let me know she was in Lidl and had seen a satellite box for £49.99 and did I want her to get me one, as there are only 8 left.

Everyone is laughing at me now.

I hope it was worth the wait, I'm installing next week.

Anyone know the number for the Samaritans?

Ps I checked it was working on Astra 28.8 and it seems fine. I'm toying on buying a Moteck sg-2100. Will it be worth it?

Nice one, here in Spain it was different, there where 400!!! Recievers (so the staff told me) and about 200!!! People (incl. me) and the recievers where gone at 9:40h. There where still dishes and lnbs and stuff for 3 days but the recievers..... However there are about 12000 Germans living here and this reciever gets about 60 german channels, free of course since the germans did not think this subscribtion model with paying for everything and anything, no matter what garbage, is for them.

ikymo,
Thanks for the laugh, sorry it was at your expense! At least you got your equipment. I went to Lidl in Bournemouth and they had sold out hours after they had opened.

Mine works OK did you hit the factory reset option?

Under the menu option code 0000 reset to english.

Spent the weekend playing with the Comag and had some fun, great FTA box for £45 and with LNB in/out connect to Sky dish and get the other FTA Astra channels without your Sky box freezing all the time.

Can wait until Lidl do one with a CAM option (available in Europe and certain UK areas)

Thanks, I've now got it in English. Since I want to put up the dish and never fiddle with it again, is hotbird (13) the best choice? (FTA Footy, cartoons and films) or is there a channel out there that has it all?

With FTA you have to take what you can - Hotbird has more channels but most are foreign - over 100 FTA. You will get some english channels but if you want the BBC regions then Astra 2 is available.

Thanks for the reply llandy- I've got $ky for the kids cartoons - looks like I'll have to hang out of my bedroom window and have a twiddle when I set it up.

Can't remember any cartoon channels on hotbird - but most foreign stations carry cartoons on weekend mornings.

Forces the kids to learn Italian, german or Spanish - can't be bad.

The Lidl box has LNB input and output so you can link it into your Sky set up and get the FTA channels on Astra2 without any problems.
