All,

The humble tale of my week 1 activities on my new (well second hand actually) Dreambox DM7000s.

Day 1 - Read as much material as possible from the English speaking Forums (this one+ sat Uk), idiots guides, user manuals, tools etc. One issue would appear to be that the delelopment of tools (FWZ etc) has overtaken the user /idiots guides, so some info is out of date and confusing.

Day 2 - Have loads of probelms connecting DM7000 to my home network. Simple mistake of LAn cable from PC to Dreambox, rather than router to Dreambox! Eventually get network connectivity and connectivity via null modem cable (hastily purchased the day before).

Day 3 - Use Dreamup to load Pli Diamond (on advice of forum users). Although all the guides recommend null modem cable approach I find using Lan is much more efficient.
Start up Dreambox and set up all satelites and Channels using auto transponder scan. Slow and labourius. Then proceed to hang PLi, necessitating a null modem re-flash and lose all my satellite/channel info! Give up in frustration!

Day 4 - Use DreamUP to load a different flash image, decide on factory image rel109, although this turns out to be a mistake given subsequent LZMA compatability issues. Further transponder scan of all available satelites really winds up rest of the family who are already commenting on Dreambox-itus

Day 5 - Discover the delights of Flash Wizard Pro 6.3 and try to load additional images to USB. All fail because of LZMA issues with rel109 image already on flash. Worried about losing satellite info again and impact on family life so do more reading.

Find Dreambox edit - what a relief. Use this to save all satellite/channel settings. Pray this works. Then use FWZ to load Gemini image into flash and Hydra, Pli and Da Vinci images onto USB all work a treat - now I am cooking on gas! Use Dreambox edit to reload sat/channel settings back into Dreambox, shock horror this works too. I am well chuffed.

Day 6 - Using Gemini image I use add-on fuctionality via blue button to download a variety of Cams and k*y files to VAr which I fill-up! Is there a way of storing add-ons on USB or HDD?
I find k*ys via addon download are all fairly old (most Jan dates), so wonder how i can get more up to date versions?
Discover files section on forum with download files for up to date k*y files. Now I have a proiblem with my FTP knowledge - I dont have any!! A quick upload of DCC gets me hooked up to an FTP screen with files on display on my Db and PC so all looks Ok. Now the problem and heres my main question:-

The info on k*y loading in a step by step idiot fashion is not available anwhere. If I unpack the latest M*ry key file and I require latest ca*d3 k*ys what exectly do I do in FTP? Which files do I overwrite? and where? Also is there anyway I can get these new files seen by the Addon process to alleviate the requirement for FTP?

Any help appreciated and hope you enjoyed my mishap diary

Cheers

find a site with recent key files on it (okay : try http://www.hutsefrutse.com/upload/ ), find the correct key file (hint : try 'Dreambox Keys 27-02-2006.zip'), unzip this file, and use DCC to copy the directories to your dreambox's /var. The /sccs directory goes with the newcamd emulator, other emulators use the /keys directory.
btw - set /var to /usb using the options in the configuration panel, usually activated by pressing the blue key. You can also copy /var to /hdd, but this will make the hd spin-up every time the /var directory is accessed, also introducing a spin-up delay, so usb is better.

Thanks JTA thats helpful.

Do I need to edit the file names on the k*ys file in FTP when transfering to VAR? Do I need to overwrite existing files? Any differences in process for Gemini image in terms of blue button functions for USB?

Thanks

To be honest mate, there is really no need to keep updating manually... i stopped doing that 18 months ago.
Long as you keep your Gemini image upto date and your Dreambox has internet access....then you will be able to download all the latest Cams/Keys you want :)

Hi Kingman!
When you ftp open var and you will see scce and keys.
Just ftp them and overwrite them, With some images it can cause a problem so you wont cause any problems if you delete the scce and key file and then replace them.
Hope this helps;)

yes, just overwrite the old files, that will do it. Automatic key downloading thru the blue panel of Gemini works, on condition that the gemini team keep their key-files up to date, which isn't allways the case. I've also had little trouble when using PLi-Citrine's key update feature - sadly they stripped it out of the Diamond image, but there's a Mary ppanel update floating around on the internet, this will download Mary's key bundle, which is always very up to date. Have fun !

WElcome KIngman. Good to see you are up and running, the rest will be easy to find out while playing with it.
By the way, I am surprised it took you so long to find the dreamboxedit, I thought I made it very obvious in the Idiot guide. Also, I never advocate the use of a null modem, it is only in case of emergency.
Also, remember that Mary has a lot of stuff on it you don't really need, I prefer to use the cam specific keys that are available.

Cheers T G

The idiots guide was great btw. I couldnt have got this far without it.

Problem is trying to run before you can walk - I was too impatient to get going!!

Great forum with some very helpful members

Thanks again
