My Satellite Setup
none yet...
Hi,

lots of questions here...

I live in London and would like to receive the Finnish channels. I found on kingofsat.net (good source?) that they are broadcast on Thor 2, Thor 3 and Intelsat 10-02. What kind of set-up would I need to tune in to these? Also, on that site most of the channels weren't listed as free to view so what else do I need to do to receive them apart from getting the satellite pointing in the right direction?

Furthermore, I lived in Finland for a while and my UK tv would pick pictures but not sound there. A Finnish tv engineer friend explained that it was due to the sound being broadcast at a different frequency in Finland than in the UK and my tv wasn't set up for that. Would this affect satellite as well? ie do I need to buy a new tv.

That covers lots of areas but I plumped for this forum as I think the kit is probably the key thing, all the rest will hopefully become clear from that!

Thanks!

The sound problem won't affect you. If you are techy, have a read in the Dreambox forum. Otherwise have a read in the "other" receiver sections.

A Dreambox, motor and 80cm dish/ lnb will get you French TV.

You'll need an 80cm dish, pointed at 1 Degree West, if only the finnish channels you are interested in, then a fixed dish will suffice. Thor 2/3 (0.8 West) and Intelsat (1 West) are co-locted - i.e. close enough so you don't have to rotate your dish, so pointed at 1West will be fine.

You'll need a digital receiver with a CI (Common Interface Slot) a Conax CAM (for example _http://www.smartcardsdirect.co.uk/conax.htm) and a card from the provider Canal Digital - your finnish will be better than mine, start here: _http://www.canaldigital.fi/ - official cards in the UK: _http://www.digicams-uk.com/prod207.htm, but its probably cheaper to buy direct in Finland if you can.

And no, your UK TV will be fine as you'll be using a scart socket. A UKTV would not work in Finalnd because the sound carrier is 0.5Mhz lower (IIRC) but only for terrestial analogue receptions. UK - is PAL I and Finland (like most Europe, except France) is PAL B/G - the only difference being the sound

@mkhu - french and finnish are not quite the same :)
