As I build me a new computer I planned to use the old setup as a server.
Got me a new ssd and a new chassi installed the old MB (M5A78L-M usb3) and tried to install Win 10, a new downloaded version.

Everything went fine, put the new code and the install started fine but after only a few minutes the computer stopped. No warning Just went dead

Perhaps a heat problem so I removed the cooler, cleaned up and put some new fresh termal compound on the cpu and tried again. Same story.
OK, bad power unit ? so I invested in a brand new one and started again. No vail.

Running out of ideas so I tried to install something else and Ubuntu worked fine No problems at all. Installed very good, working 10/4

Very strange ! Must be a command in the windows install program that killed the computer.

Check that the RAM is set down tight to the socket and in the right slots, also that the SSD drive and other hard drive are seen by the BIOS and in the right order.

You said that Ubuntu worked fine, did you re-format the drive where your going to install the windows OS??? Sometimes the two don't play well with each other.

I tried Win10 but as it didn´t worked I tested Ubunto just to see if it would work. Just to make sure that it
was something with the window. Tried later on with a fresh copy of win 8.1. It worked fine until it was time
to start the install. Loaded all files and did a restart. After 2 mins it stopped. The ssd was new when I started
and after the ubunto it was separated into 2 logical parts. Only ubunto will work.

So it stops with no installation error message????

If I remember right widows stars loading install files into RAM and runs from those files, it then looks for an available hard drive to start the main OS install, if no suitable drive is found it stops, but it should post a message about the fault.

Can you reformat the SSD drive on a working W10 computer and try again, this may fix the problem......Maybe....

One other thing, the copy of W10 you downloaded, was it a full install version (new PC) or an upgrade version, the upgrade version will not load/install into a blank hard drive, it needs a previous version of widows to install to.

Yes the drive was empty so I did a full install. Tried both way, from a dvd and from an usb
Just stops without no warning. When I redo the install it says it was an unexpected fault and I have to start from the beginning.
I think the computer is OK as I could install Ubunto without any problem.
Could be a problem in the bios, perhaps time for a re-install

It turned out to be a cpu problem.
Got me a new fresh one (they are old so rather cheap) and everything is working 10/4

Great to see you got it fixed, but the CPU??? Usually if they go bad the PC will not run at all.
It could have been that the heat sink compound dried out and it over heated, I have seen this on many systems, a fresh application of some good stuff and it's back.

Yes it tried that and was almost sure it was the motherboard but no vain. As it was a good MB I decided to test the cpu and Bingo
