For the first time that I can remember, M$ appears to be actively going after specific infections via a fix at the 'Windows Update' website.

I've just downloaded and installed it, and cut this out for anyone else interested.

Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2005 (KB890830)
Download size: 256 KB, less than 1 minute
This tool checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps remove any variants found. You should also use an antivirus product to remove other malicious software that may be present. This tool helps maintain your computer, and its appearance does not indicate that your machine is infected with malicious software. After you run this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Personally, I think it's well overdue.

Unfortunately, I also see it as a step towards the M$ goal of identifying (and possibly even neutralising) 'pirate' copies of XP. I say this based on the 11th hour decision to rip that code from SP2, and the reasoning behind it.

I thought there were no pirate copies of XP anyway, well not after the first time someone goes on the LAN or NET with one.

a friend said that his dodgy copy didnt work after he did an update from M$, so maybe they are already identifying pirate copies?

Only the original VLK was killed by SP1. Nothing since.
