Can't disagree there Gmbp, although there are some good specialist pie makers still around and a specialist pastie shop is doing a fortune in a town near me. There is obviously still an appetite for them (excuse the pun), even down south, the Lancashire pies still take a bit of beating though, almost worth the 4 hour drive. :)

All I have to say is that "pies" nowadays are not the same as what one could get in the 1940's and those that my mother and grandmother used to make. :D
Perhaps I am showing my age and think back too much.
Keep pie makers in employment, eat pies thrice daily.

gmbp

Well there is one pie that seems to have been out there forever! 'Fray Bentos'
when I was young I used to think my mum made them herself, till one day I saw the empty tin in the trash pan!:(

LOL, I am an unashamed lover of the F B steak and kidney pie, they were a bit of a luxury when we were kids and I still love the slightly artificial flavour. :)

Well seeings I have never had the pleasure of tasting a Lancashire pie I can't comment on that one....but however if it has that hard old pastry like York stone then I'm a puff pastry man!

Well the best pie that I ever had is when I was visiting relations on the Isle of Wight, the wife an me stopped at a tea room ordered a slice each of the deepest apple pie I have ever seen! I reckon this pie must have 10lb of apples in it! not had a piece better since.
