Based on the number of such bodies in the area surveyed, the astronomers then extrapolated that such objects could be extremely common.
They calculated that they could be almost twice as common as "main-sequence stars" - such as our own Sun - which are still burning through their hydrogen fuel stock.

Joking aside its nice to see such things are still being discovered, apparently though Prof. Brian Cox is fed up dispelling the myth that this is the rogue planet that some say the Mayans predicted would destroy the Earth _http://uk.news.yahoo...apocalypse.html

A rogue planet would be somewhat difficult to fend off, even if it was known about a few hundred years before impact.

The biggest threat to life is still what happens on the planet's surface, followed closely by an everso slight variation in radiation from our nearest star.
