Living in the Birmigham area big city and all that I never thought it would be so hard to find an installer that I feel confident with at a fair price....Having trouble finding installers at all. Most stop short at installing freesat dishes and not motorised systems....

Phoned CAI for installers and got three names only one relatively local and I have spoken to him and they do it only because thay have one guy that can do it......Labour costs £51 first hour and £38 each hour after that........Number of hours undefined by installer.... Couldn't even give me a typical example.

Installers located on the internet claiming local installations but they give no details of there business address and own location.Just a phone number and hype about what they do.......Checked with CAI and they are not members.......

Any advise or info on installers in my area welcome......Trying to avoid paying for quotes only to find its to high......Bit of a nightmare really......

Not sure if satelliteman would cover your area, might be a bit out of his way. Nanochickin is around that area he might do it for you.

Not being CAI approved doesn't mean that the installer it's not competent .
The way i see it , as an installer you have to pay to be on the CAI list so it's like advertising .
I for one will not pay someone to approve me and my work and i have never failed an install yet in over 5 years work .
Might be wrong though . I'll probably get a slap on the wrist in a minute . :)

No slap on the wrist, as you say, CAI membership does not necessarily guarantee that someone is a good installer (although it should) and equally, lack of CAI membership does not mean that an installer lacks competence, many like myself choose not to spend our hard earned cash on a membership as we can see no benefit and simply get on with doing a good job.

Points taken and agree. I had not even heard of CAI until a few days ago........Been on the phone to them they sort of take up complaints if there are any and I think they said something about safety ......When I enquired they were unable to differentiate on their records between installers that did motorised systems and those that don't........

I might have found a local chap recommended by a sat dealer I have used before.....Probably not a member of CAI either......Have spoken to him wating for a ring back to arrange free quote........He was quite helpfull and seemed quite fair without going into details.......Keeping my fingers crossed as I have had many dead ends with regard to local people........3 out of 5 said they used to do motorised but don't any more......

The may have meant 'proper' motorised as there are a lot round here that frankly wouldn't know your shielded four core from something that powers the caravan from the horse.

Two out of the three said they were too much trouble breaking down.......Mechanical devices do fail that's life. I did conclude personally that it's more likely they wern't very good at it...

Judging by the voice of the third one might be wrong but he sounded quite old or perhaps unwell......

Found out a little more about CAI membership. They give a double gaurantee........Members have to give a 1 year warranty of work carried out.......If by any chance a CAI member cannot or does not fulfill the warranty then CAI organisation carries out the warranty on behalf of domestic installations only in the first year... They also give insurance cover.

Having been in membership for over 10 years [thankfully no longer], I could pick on the above statement.

As mentioned, finding a member does not necessarily guarantee that someone is a good and competent installer.

When i bought my motorised setup i was in a similar situation. I paid someone to come out and install mine, I fitted all the equipment so it only needed aligning, they came out it took them about 2 hours and due to the equipment they used the system was spot on. HOWEVER...

I disagree with them saying equipment fails etc, the motors are incredible, think about what they go through bolted to the side of your house with a 1meter dish hanging on the arm and when it gets windy the thing is litterally all over the place!

The problem i found was that most installers avoid motorised systems bcause they become "married" to it (not my choice of words) the alignment slips every few months unless you are well tucked away in a wind free zone. I bought a meter in the end and tought myself as towards the last few months we have had a lot of wind and i was up a ladder every week!

I ditched the motorised system in the end in favour of the Wave frontier T90. this never moves even in high winds.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they go out of alignment.

Mines been ok for the last 18 months and all the ones i've installed for customers are now well over 2 years old and i've never had to go back to them once.

A lot of the time it depends on what the quality of the equipment that has been installed and the size of the dish installed on the motor. The bigger the dish the more strain on the motor in wind.

A lot of the older Moteck DISEqC motors with nylon gears used to fail, but the newer motors with metal gears last quite well.

I have one client whose motor is getting on for four years old and it hasn't missed a beat and has never gone out of alignment.

I myself guarentee all my work and equipment installed for 12 months from the date of installation if i supply the equipment as i know it will be stuff that is good quality and can be trusted to continue working and won't fail.

If its equipment that the customer has supplied i only guarentee my work not the equipment.

Add aluminium masts and 'breeze' block walls to the list of equipment that good installers should not go near.
