Clearing up an old Win XP machine for a friend (one of the first 1.2 GHz processors with a Win 98SE upgrade to XP - drive is still in FAT32 ), and found that there were two versions of Mozilla, 2.0.0.2 and 2.0.0.3. in the directory

Norton was the first to go, as it had ignored some basic spyware inside the unit, and two trojans. Slight improvement in speed, but not what I was expecting.

Added the Avast, Lavasoft and Zone Alarm group to allow basic safe access to the Internet before proceeding

Stupidly removed the older version of Mozilla before checking, and - hey presto - no browser. Added IE 7 from the Microsoft website and then updated Windows to SP2.

Machine still runs very slow despite cleaning all useless files and cache, checking for other Spyware and virus/trojans. It has a very long start up process, some five minutes before operation.

What is the latest version of Firefox for this type of machine, and does anyone know if there is a programme that can identify where the machine is slowed down.
Would converting FAT32 to NTFS be
1) Feasible, and
2) likely to speed things up ?

Cheers

You should only remove software using the Control Panel.

You can get the latest version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org/

FAT32 to NTFS is easily done but isn't any faster.

Have you done an error-checking and defrag of the Hard Drive?

I removed Zone Alarm as I thought it slowed the PC down (use Kerio now).

Remove all the crap from START UP and turn off all unnecessary services:

I would recommend a volume repair as well as a defrag (do from same panel) also if the XP has been in use for a long time then a registry tuner would more than likely help considerably

Thanks

Yes, the two Mozillas were found in the Control Panel remove programme.

Error checking - no, does XP have a 'scan drive' service ?

Defrag - Yes, even though analysing claimed it wasn't required. Hard drive is about 70% full, and had very few fragmentations.

Reg scanning was carried out by the owner a number of times.
I hadn't bothered as a result.
Which one is recommended though ?

Will try cleaning the start up on Monday
