my dreambox 500s not connecting to internet does both my lap top and box needs to be both plug into modem at the same time for them to work am new to this

So, how do You like to connect the box ? Only now and then or always ? Do You use a cable ? What image has the DB ?

Plug the db into a spare ethernet port on your router.

if you dont have any spare ports get a 4 port ethernet switch for a tenner to give you extra ports.

Once you connect your DM500 to the 4 port ethernet switch (as suggested by Analoguesat)
You can contact your box with your laptop via the router (if it has a wireless).
Alternatively you can use a simple LAN cable.
