Ive got a Netgear Duo 2*1 terabyte drives set up with the basic onboard RAID for redundancy. It lives behind the tv, its noisy on boot when the fans are running full belt but its ok at other times. If its very quiet in the room I can sometime hear it. Ive never investigated any android apps for it, as its no real hassle to connect the phone it up to one of the computers to pull photos off. The blue led on the front is very bright and may be a distraction if the front of the unit is visible in the room Investigate a basic battery back up - mine scrambled a drive after a power cut, although a new drive left to synch overnight recovered it. Mine is one of the best things Ive ever bought for my network.
