Btw, a tandem lift still only works up to 4000tonnes, if the Gulliver specifications are to be believed, there might be more fun and games once the operation commences.

^^^ technically, will be quite an epic process. 2 cranes will work simultaneously, total capacity 7000 tonnes:

Rambiz - Scaldis
Gulliver - Scaldis

scaldis-smc probably very happy, and looking forward to future jobs involving the performance of the Norwegian navy :O)

Almost certain shes a write off. Seeing how little was left above water all the machinery & electronics would have to be stripped out & condemned. Its probably cheaper to build a new one than do a total strip & refit
Modern Naval shipboard electronics and electrical equipment is sea water proof to a certain depth. (at least it was when I was in the Navy)

It all depends on how long it's under water, and how deep, some stuff would/could be replaced, but non-electrical machinery and other hardware can stand up to a bit of water for some time.

All though if left in the water too long, barnacles and other very small sea creatures will get into things, then it's a major refit.

ok. latest news, the cranes still waiting for the emptying of fuel to be finished. The crane owners must be very happy, just waiting drinking coffee and making lots of money. The failure of securing it properly and letting it slide under water is catastophic, if it was kept mostly above water I suppose the whole ship could have been repaired, now probably completely beyond salvation due to long term internal seawater exposure + damage due to movements against the rocks.

btw, another navy ship collided yesterday (!) in the same area, this time with a small private boat, two persons had to jump into the sea.

Now, the latest disaster, a 270 m long dry dock sank just some km's away from the frigate
History, original named Medway Dock AFD4, ordered built by Winston Churchill in 1911.

Before (at another location, looks like sinking is the only thing it can do properly after 117 years, although maintained and modified).

Medway Dock AFD4 1912

Some additional information on AFD4

AFD4 - Capacity 33,000 tons. Built by Swan Hunter Wigham & Richardson 1912. The Medway dock.
Delivered to Sheerness that year and remained until 1915 when it was towed back to theTyne
It was moored at Jarrow Stake throughout WW 1.

On12 Sept '25 AFD4 was towed to Devonport by five tugs -Retort, Resolve, St. Kitts, St.Mellions and St. Clear.
HMS Ramilles was the first ship docked in AFD4 at Devonport.

Work on SMS Derfflinger
SMS Derfflinger was one of the Derfflinger Class German battle Cruisers (along with Lutzow and Hindenburg). Launched on June 1 1913.
AFD4 1.jpgDerfflinger fought at the Battle of Dogger bank and earlier at Jutland.

Derfflinger was scuttled at Scapa Flow on June 21st 1919 and lay in 45 metres of water until being raised in July 1939 by the London, Liverpool Salvage Co.
She was lying upside down and divers spent weeks cutting away superstructure to get her manageable and onto AFD4. Despite the divers doing as much as they could, the dock had to sink one and a half feet below the design specifications in order to load the ship.
Derfflinger was then anchored, still capsized, off the island of Risa.

AFD4 was brought back to the Clyde in September 1941, being placed under the control of the "Emergency Repair Organisation" , the voyage lasted 6 days. The Admiralty originally approached John Brown of Clydebank to oversee the management of the work in the dock, but due to pressure of new build work at their yard, they declined and the Fairfield Ship Building & Engineering Co of Govan took management responsibiliy, but drawing labour from other Clyde yards as required.

The dock was anchored close to the mouth of Gareloch between Roseneath Point and Helensburgh and as this was remote from the shipyards and docks on the south bank of the Clyde, two old paddle steamers the"Balmoral" and "Lorna Doon" were moored alongside and altered to meet messing and accommodation needs.

The first ship to dock was the new monitor HMS Roberts and over the period over 70 vessels were docked for repair. These included Aurania, Royal Sovereign and carriers Queen, Trumpeter, Begum, Biter, Patroller and Archer.

After the end of WW2 Metal Industries bought AFD4 from the Admiralty, collecting and transporting SMS Derfflinger a second time to Faslane Port in 1946 where she was broken up over the next two years.

In 1948 AFD4 was towed to Rotterdam Dockyard, renamed PRINS BERNHARD DOCK , before being sold again in 1984 to Gotaverken Finnboda, Stockholm, (who went bankrupt in 1991).

In 1992 following a failed sale of the dock to Mexico, AFD4 ended up at Bergen (Laksevaag) two years later.

Attempts at securing to avoid slide into deep water, but stopped due to stormy weather arriving later today, crane has returned to safer harbour. So it'a all a big question what will\can happen.

At least the conning tower remains above water, you still have a bit of time to take what's useful.

Ahh they screwed up, they should have filled it with ping-pong balls, (see episode 21 of Myth Busters) it would have stopped it from going further down.

And it may be toast now, too long under water, I dont understand why it sank, after any collision underway Condition ZEBRA is set, this should have made it almost water tight.

*should* is the word. Turns out many parts of the ship got flooded one after the other due to construction defects. The remaining 4 sisterships are just as unsafe and will need serious modifications. The scandal only gets worse.

Hey, didn't the naval yard test their product line? I thought they did compulsory crash-tests like with cars lol :O) Anyway, the test is now done.

As for the crew, they believed the tanker's lights were a port ! (the nearby oil terminal), thus the decision of no need to change course to avoid a stationary object far away. About the radio warnings, they believed they were talking to some other ship far away, not understanding the reality of the collision warnings. Radar was seemingly working, but report tells the crew did not take it into consideration, they had made up their minds that the 'port' can not move and ram them (even as the radar may have showed otherwise). So, total confusion, and a probable lack of skills and experience.

Salvage on hold due to storm.

Construction defects...... Sounds like the Titanic engineers are at it again......""We don't need the water tight bulkheads to go to the top deck, the water will never get that high, leave them were they are, this ship is unsinkable""

Reports says leaks followed the propeller shaft which run trough several watertight compartiments, flooding most of the ship, engines etc.
And they chose Spain, the cheapest offer in competition with Germany\US. Went ridiculously over budget, and big delays.

Probably a good idea to take the missiles off. The whole rescue would dissolve into farce if one of them got set off & sank one of the lifting cranes!

Terma DL-12T decoy launcher, Loki torpedo countermeasureArmament:

Since the frigate had just returned from some NATO war games in the Baltics, it would be travelling with more than the standard arsenal. Dart and /or Vulcano projectiles spring to mind.

Plus a helicopter of course.
