My dad has a motorised dish, which someone installed for him less than a year ago. But unfortunately I have no idea what make or model it is.
I am looking to buy him a new receiver as his old one (Tachnomate TM-5200D M2 USB super+) as great as it is, it can't get HD channels. Been looking on internet but not sure what's what with all the linux, cccam and all other things out there.
So I am wondering what would everyone here recommend.
Here are the features I am looking for:
Suitable for motorised dish.
Receive HD and SD channels.
Ease of updating and adding channels.
Don't need it to record anything.
EPG not really important.
Not sure if it is possible, but would love to some how get PPV like UFC or Boxing.

In terms of budget less than £200 would be ideal.
Thank you all in advance.

Hello - welcome to the forum! :)

If you are happy with how the existing Technomate works then have a look at the modern Technomates - great little receivers and lots of our members have them.

The 5402 M3 are popular. Ive got one - a decent receiver for the money. There are a few mnor issues with it, but only an advanced hobbyist user would ever run into them.

Any idea which satellites your dad usually views, or preferred genre? If general viewing, there are quite a few good receivers within you budget. If there are any specific requirements, tell us now as it helps us to advise better.

Also, welcome to the forum

Thanks Mlamber,
He usually watches middle eastern channels. The tend to be scattered on few satellites, hotbird, eutel, etc.
I guess what I was asking with is TM-5402 too old, is that how future prof is that?
As I said there are what I am looking for:

Don't need it to record anything.

Since a lot of boxes come with Ethernet Port, would be able to stream things on it?

Some of the older boxes are actually better than some of the new ones!
If you could advise particular satellites, or even channels, this would help. I know your not a " techie " but depending on what your looking for can make a big difference to the receiver ( stb for short ) you need. Only some stb´s work well on satellites with low symbol rates. Most modern stb´s to have internet connection via cable or wi-fi to enable streaming etc. For pay for view or other encrypted service you will need a stb with card slot, ci module or cccam ability.
Hence, any additional info you can advise would be useful.
The more info, the better the advice!

Eutelsat Hot Bird, Hot Bird and Astra is used the most by far the most.
They tend to be mix of HD and SD channels.

I'd also look at the VU+ Zero. Retails at around €120....

The M3 is the third generation of this receiver, certainly not from 2008. I have the 5402 HD M2 Ci which is three or four years old. It's an excellent receiver and porbably one of the most reliable and easy to use.

TM-5402 HD M3 has great reviews else where too.
I think I'm going to go for it. Can't thank you guys enough, local satellite guy had sold him something that didn't really work.
Just a quick question, can I use it to watch encrypted channels like bt sport with a smart a card? If so whats the best way to get a card.

The UK encrypted channels are going to be tricky - cards tend not to play nicely with none Sky receivers. They can be got to work for the standard def channels but often you need to play with the internal configuration files.

Sky UK cards won't work in TM5402 receivers as far as I am aware - might be wrong though. Some HD channels still work in Linux receivers (BT Sport HD being one of them) but it's such an expensive package these days...

Linux receivers?
As in they have Linux operating systems on them?

These cards are not legal? Or are the difficulties due to proprietary hardware/software?
