Hi
In my local market I could not find any of the approved HD by Dream, I found the following:

Seagate ST3160021A (160G:cool: 5V: 0.72 A and 12V : 0.35 A

Samsung SP1203N (120G:cool: 5V: 0.6 A and 12V: 0.5A

Maxtor YAR41BW0 (120G:cool: 5V: 0.67 A and 12V: 0.96A

So, which one is the best in terms of the electrical requirement?

Which power consumption should be considered? 5v or 12v ?

Hi kim,

I'm afraid I didnt look into it as deeply as you.
I knew that DMM recommend 5400rpm drives and I had a 7200rpm drive doing nothing. I read on another forum of people using 7200rpm drives so I gave it a try. Works fine!
It's a Samsung SP0802N 80GB 7200rpm (2MB buffer, I think). Sounds like a little brother of the Samsung on your list.

If it's not too expensive, 'give it a whirl', as they say.

73 & good luck.

I bought a Maxstor Maxline II UDMA133 300 GB from dabs.com in September for £144 inc VAT. This is a 5400 rpm drive and was on the recommended list. It works fine in a DB7000 - take care opening the lid. They are doing this now for £147 (76 in stock) and a 250 GB version at present for £110 inc VAT.
I don't know if they are the cheapest but they are usually not far off. I have ordered a lot from them and they are usually reliable (provided the item is in stock - avoid on order or available in a few days)
Their site is h**p://dabs.com.

I think the 5400 rpm drives are recommended because they use less power than the 7200 rpm drives and they are quieter. You can get the connectors from Maplin.

Replied to your thread below a few days ago. Seagate 160 is good.

Thanks for the replies m8s. I don't have other choice here, all the HDDs, I found are 7200 rpm type. The above three HDDs are the only ones with less power, I found WD with much more Amps requirements. Choosing from the local market here will ensure the 1 year warranty, as my old HDD was from outside, and it got defected after almost one year use.
2 john_graydon, thanks again, in your last post you mentioned that the 160G Seagate is dream approved. The one in my list is not approved by dream.

I got the Seagate 160GB. When I installed in the DM, I could see it in the information menue, but when trying to format, it said not HDD. I'm using latest RU image. Should I install and format it in the PC first or should I try another image?

Don't format it in the PC.

I guess you're right. Another image looks the best option...

Hi kim,

Thats a bit um-er I'm afraid. Some have found that formatting in a PC helps with a recalcitrant HDD but others say that it messed theirs up so DB would not recognise it!!
If you've got a copy of the Klona guide you could try the Linux commands to format and mount it using telnet.
You could boot the DMM image in flash and try from there (make sure that ext3 is selected in the dropdown before you start the format).

73 & good luck.

Hi Kim
I formatted mine in the Angharad image. Really no problems.

Thanks for your help m8s.

I checked it with Hydra zeus image, and it was the same story, so, I installed the HDD in my other PC (was already open cover), format it with PartitionMagic 7.0Pro (little bit old), in Linux Ext2 file system, then installed it in the DM and format it again as Ext3, and now it is working fine. Using RU image, the DM sees the HDD as 157 GB instead of 160GB, I guess this is normal right?

Hi

I got a cheap second hand 5400rpm 40 gig seagate out of an old mac for A$20. Not a lot of space but anything worthwhile I just ftp to my mac and delete from the dream drive so always plenty of room.

cheers from OZ 121fred
