I saw this today - anyone know if this is going to be of use to us fringe viewers?

The BBC today announced it will launch five new subscription-free HD channels on Tuesday 10 December.

The new channels: BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBeebies HD and CBBC HD will be available on Freeview HD, Freesat HD, YouView, Sky HD and Virgin Media. Viewers will also be able to catch-up on HD programmes from these channels on BBC iPlayer.

The channels will be launching in time for Christmas, so viewers will be able to access more of their favourite festive treats in the highest quality from the comfort of their sofas or on-the-go via BBC iPlayer. So whether it’s Jack Whitehall’s Bad Education on BBC Three HD, the New Year’s Day concert from Vienna on BBC Four HD, breaking news and a chance to look back at 2013 on BBC News HD, A Christmas Carol on CBeebies HD or a Dumping Ground Special on CBBC HD, all the family can enjoy more of the BBC programmes they love in HD.

Tony Hall, BBC Director-General, says: “I am delighted that we’re able to launch our new HD channels in time for Christmas, when families gather together to enjoy some of the best TV from the BBC. This year, people will be able to watch even more of our programmes in brilliant quality.”

All five new HD channels will broadcast the same programmes as their standard definition equivalents in HD.

Over 50 per cent of homes in the UK are already HD enabled, with reports estimating that the number of HD homes is expected to grow to reach over 20 million (80 per cent of all UK homes) by 2016 and over 23 million homes (90 per cent of all UK homes) by 2019.

They have been transmitting for a couple of weeks now, albeit not formally due for launch on the Freesat and BSkyB EPGs until tomorrow.

Currently on Astra 1N UK Beam.

They will go to 2E in the New Year.

Correction BBC News HD and BBC Four HD/Cbeebies HD are on the 2F.

Yes, quite right. Thankyou.

Same difference as far as Fringe, though: Either staying on 2F UK Beam or getting rationalised onto 2E in due course.

Strangely enough, I read a Newspaper piece a few days ago where Auntie suggested they want to make their output widely available outside UK: I suspect that will be on a paid basis, though, as per BBC Entertainment (Or whatever it may now be called!)

Your profile doesn't say where you are in the fringes but the answer will most likely be - probably not.

Now launched on Freesat:

147 BBC THREE HD
148 BBC FOUR HD
212 BBC NEWS HD
607 CBBC HD
608 CBeebies

You can get them now after a rescan or, like most will, they'll appear overnight during the 03.00 Housekeeping.

I seem to be really on the fringe in Frankfurt. With a 1m dish I get ALL of the BBC channels but lost the Channel 5 stable except 5HD. I plan to wait until the new satellites are up and running before upgrading to a new dish size.

C5 HD is still on the widebeam as its encrypted.
