Hi all,

I've finally switched from an Openbox V8S receiver to an Edision OS Mini which is running the latest OpenVix image.

I'm motorised so have spent most of the evening manually scanning every satellite as I'm not too keen on using premade lists but I'm not sure if I've entered my Longitude & Latitude details correctly. I've noticed some satellites are showing a better signal than on my Openbox - 42 east for example has gone from generally 78% to 95% but oddly, channels on 19.2 have a reduced signal - Das Erste HD went from 86% on my Openbox to 61% on this new box.

The only thing that I think could have caused this is me inputting things in wrong. I've attached a screenshot of my long/lat from my Openbox to what I have entered in the Edision. Could someone please check and tell me if i've put the digits in the right places? :D

Many Thanks!

You appear to have an extra "0" in your lat & longs in the lower screen.

Dont worry what the sig strengths are - the only inportant one is the quality.

Thanks Analoguesat :)

The figure that was 61% was SNR. that seems to be the one thats lower than usual and higher on some other sats.

Going to sound really thick here but could someone please show me exactly what I should enter in the new box as there's more zeros than on the Openbox :D

Many thanks :)

Not bad so far at all. Should enigma2 boxes be able to show feeds? I've just scanned both 7E and 10E but it didn't pick up one, my Openbox used to scan a shed load in. I can see on Satelliweb that there are plenty knocking about.

Yes they should be able too no probs, your dish big enough for the feeds in question mate. The golf one on 10E William posted on here is no use for me, my dish is to small (80cm) up north of the country.

Perhaps its just the time of day :)

I'm having a serious problem with 19.2e though. Das Erste HD coming in at only 60%, TVE International only 39% and TRT Turk not even locking - tuner failed! All these came through really strong on the Openbox. Not sure why this is as other satellites are on par with what was reported on my old box. I've tried the 'Go to X' function on the box but nothing.

It's an Inverto Black Ultra. All that's changed is the box.

Listen mate some receivers do NOT like the Black Ultras (Even just the single variety) but let's not jump the gun here. Just something else to factor in later, my Technomate Twin OE had issues with the I.B.U.

I get Das Erste HD at: SNR 99% AGC 71%, TVE at SNR 82% AGC 70% and TRT Turk at SNR 77-76% AGC 71%. That's me hopping out of bed to check, 80cm Inverto dish with kindly donated G.I. twin LNB.

Thanks for checking Ghostleader, much appreciated.

Really not sure whats wrong here - I have noticed some satellites are showing an improvement in signal of over 15% such as Turksat. Nothing had dropped as bad as that transponder on 19.2 though, and weirdly on my Openbox it was the one with the highest SNR.

Could it possibly be something in the OpenVIX image itself causing it?

Would say no to that, but there have been duff motorised errors with Vix images in the past which were quickly rehashed into a newer .whatever release. Most likely this is a settings issue, had you bastardized any of your positioner settings in order to receive anything better with your openbox?

I had tweaked my longitude and latitude to the figures above which improved signals as I reckon my dish had misaligned ever so slightly in the high winds. But I did just try changing them on the new box to their 'real' values which hasn't helped

You could check by using Diseqc 1.2.
Change your motor settings to advanced, then select Diseqcq 1.2, select No to using Usals, and manually store the satellites, e.g. 19.2E at 1, 16E at 2, 13E at 3, 10E at 4, 9E at 5, 7e at 6, 5e at 7, etc..., until you have all the ones you want to test, both East, and West, then go to positioner setup, select a satellite, then use the options, to manually move your dish, East/West, and the fine tune options, to get the strongest signal quality, then save it at the corresponding position, matching your original settings, i.e. Astra 1, 19.2E, at 1.
Then check your signal quality readings, for various channels, and go back into the positioner menu, and fine tune, if required.
Once done check your Diseqc 1.2 quality readings against your Usals readings.

Thank you all.

Tried the Openbox again and the affected channels are fine on there - 86% on Das Erste HD. The E2 box on the other hand shows 56%, since last night I've realised that its not just 19.2e either, I'm getting some strong TPs on Hotbird coming in at only 35%! Whats odd is that some transponders have improved - the TRT channels on 42 east is 93% when they were only 78% on the Openbox.

Just really odd and a shame as I've been reluctant to upgrade my receiver for the past year de due to something like this happening, despite being told it would just work seamlessly. Really like the look and feel of a linux box and the ability to stream channels to a PC is great.

Could it simply be the box giving an inaccurate reading when in actual fact the signal is indeed strong? I've had TVE Internacional on for over an hour at 35% and there's been no break up.

Different receivers provide different signal quality readings, some are too generous.
It seems very strange that some strong transponders, on 13E, are providing only 35% signal quality readings.
Why not back up your settings and try a different image, to see what results they give.

Thank you all for your help in trying to tackle the issue with my new box. Unfortunately couldn't get anything to work so have now gone back to using my Openbox. Have no idea if the Edision box was faulty or just a really bad tuner but on a further inspection I realised there were tons of channels that it had failed to tune in on a blind scan. When I tried manually searching for them the box reported 0 channels found yet my Openbox will happily scan them in no problem.

The Openboxes might be cheap and cheerful but considering mine cost £35 and yet performs better than a £100 linux receiver bought from a reputable retailer - I think it speaks volumes. I know that Enigma2 in general isn't bad and that I probably was just very unlucky but on this occassion the saying 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' has been relaying in my head all weekend!

Now I just hope that WOS are understanding and allow me to return the box to them.
