Hi

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction to renew some of my kit.
At the moment I have an Echostar C120 LNB joined to a feedhorn with an inbuilt polarisor for skew adjustment. The feedhorn is one with a narrow barrel ?22mm, and all mounted on a 1.2m dish.
Due to age & corrosion all parts need replaced, but I'm having a bit of a job finding the feedhorn/polarisor part. A new LNB obviously isn't a problem.

Or perhaps there's an alternative way to renew these parts. Presumably things have moved on apace since these bits were new 10+ years ago?

The receiver being used is an Echostar 3000 ADIP Via, if this helps.

Do you have an offset of prime focus dish ?

If its offset and a mechanical polariser I think Ive got an original Echostar unit (with long feed ) in a box in the shed. This, coupled with a quattro band LNB, is still about the best thing for scanning on Ku band,

If its a prime focus item , I may have a stepper motor still from a Chaparral, but it wont be new.

Whereabouts are you ?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. The dish is an offset 1.2m E'star.
The problem seems to be that the barrel of the feedhorn/polariser is corroded and leaks very slowly. Damp enters the assembly and a drip forms internally on the pin. So gradually over the space of a few days when its raining the signal disappears. I then need to go out and give the lnb a good smacking to get the drip to fall off, and alls then well again until the next time. Unless the drip has turned to ice.
Hardly satisfactory!

I suppose the thing to check on your unit would be, lack of corrosion, barrel width, skew connection, and C120 flange. Then I'm sure we can come to an arrangement.
I'm up near Inverness.

This is a mechanical device, and so has a WR75 flange for use with a Quattro band LNB.

I can take pictures, and as its brand new I suppose it has no faults to speak of, but if you are looking to fit to a C120 LNB, then its of no use to you.

Let me know

:) I knew this would happen, two posts and I'm out of my depth.
I have no idea about WR75 flanges, or quattro lnbs.
I'll look into it over the weekend though.

Ask away, no point in checking elsewhere.

Grab some numbers off the dish, and maybe a picture or two.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. The dish is an offset 1.2m E'star.

My dish is also a 1.2m echostar offset 1994 vintage, which was made by prodelin, since i did away with the feedhorn/poloriser/lnb set up 4 years ago, i have used a channel master feed (you can get from satellite superstore) and a c120 invacom, this set up greatly out performs the old triple band set up, you will have no more problems with condensation,if your dish is the same as mine it will have 2 curved bits of metal where the feed goes held together with 2 bolts, before you put the new feed on wrap some black tape around the stem of the feed so it grips better when you clamp it all together, let me know if you have any more problems.

That sounds like exactly the same setup, and it's good to know I'm not the only one with damp inside the lnb.
One question on your new feedhorn/lnb.
Have you ever missed the ability to manually adjust the skew? Or can you still?

Channel Hopper. Thanks, but I''l investigate this option further first I think.

In the past when i first got the set up , i put up with the condensation for about a year, then i junked the fancy echostar feed/poloriser combination thingy and bought a swedish microwave feedhorn and an irte poloriser, that effectively stopped the condensation problem, digital came, and in the year 2000 i took that route, most of the modern sat boxes dont cater for skew, so no more skew, and to answer your question, i have not missed the skew, you will find a BIG improvement overall.
Your dish is still made, echostar badged them as their own in the 1990's, they are made by prodelin in the usa, it may be difficult to get parts(you may never need them) because prodelin are in the commercial market, nice to know we have some top quality gear on the wall m8.

Thanks for that. It saves me tying myself in knots trying to find a lnb/polorisor/feedhorn replacement.

Yep. Thats what was confusing me when looking to replace what I've got. There doesn't seem to be a many about.
You wouldn't happen to know if an MTI lnb would focus ok with this dish?
for example, this one

That would work well, yes, this is what i use:
The first pic is a channel master feedhorn, wich is now a bit more expensive now than when i got mine, the second pic is a c120 invacom, can be got really cheap if you shop around, the 3rd pic is another feedhorn that is much cheaper than the channel master one, i now use the items in the first 2 pics, i did not know you could get all in one 22mm voltage switchers like that, mti lnb's are pretty good, you should do well with the one in your link, have fun !!!

Hi Guys
I have a similer set up to you.... my Poloriser is from Analogue days and im now thinking of removing it.... I was wondering if i stand to increase signal stength by removing it.... ???
I would also like to try a different feed horn but I dont know what make of dish i have... all I know is its a 1.2 mtre Prime Focus aluminium dish.... is it important to match a feed horn to a particular dish and wheres the best place to buy from???
Thanks in advance John

Only one said that removing polarisers helped the situation

Are you are interested in getting the best out of every signal ?

CH Thanks for your reply.... You could say I'm interested in getting the best out of every signal!!
I especialy would like to squeeze more out of Nilesat if I can.... I currently get 39 channels, 12 of which are fairly consistant the remainder are greatly influenced by conditions and the time of day..... usualy OK early morning (then falling away) untill gradualy returning late afternoon to early evening time.
I would like a bigger dish but which one??... how big is big enough (without breaking the bank and annoying the neighbours)??.... and which type is best..?? Primary or Offset ??

John

A 1.2m working correctly in the South of England should be getting about the same number of channels (65 or so with about 15 full time ones)

So it sounds like a bigger dish is the only real guarantee of improvement

The CNR gain obtained with a correctly adjusted polariser more than offsets the dB insertion loss.
