I have been told I need at 1.5 metre ku motorised dish and a 2.3 metre c band motorised dish to pick up FTA signals in S.Africa. It will be an adventure.
My Location
South Africa, Eastern cape
The guy that's selling it used to work for them and now runs a Sat shop. The dish is just a gimmick to attract attention but is in v good condition.

The owner/seller couldn't be more helpful and has negotiated with a local installer.

They are going to set up a KU band dish quite quickly, to search on sats at 7 and 10E (horse racing).

The C band is being disassembled fro the shop. It can be split into 4 parts, but he recommends just splitting in 2 parts, and being
driven the 100 miles to my location. I am hopeful the mounts etc will be in place soon .. but the foot bolt mechanism needs making,
as I am not sure it will disassemble properly.

Holidays in SA start early in Dec, and go onto mid Jan for tradespeople. Will try etc, but if its not in place by Dec 15, it may get left to
next yr.

The winegard specs were kept in a file. They were a little unclear and I should have rotated.

Maybe the specs didnt apply .. but it says the Antenna spec is 10" -- (3 metres) but haven't read in detail.

Its definately not small.

There is quite a bit of variety for horse racing on 7.0 East and 10.0 East in Ku band. Racing from France, the United Arab Emirates and sometimes the UK is available on satellite feeds with decent strength signals.

Thanks .. I just like to watch the festival racing and its somewhere to start.

The sat guy was petty despondent about the longevity of his profession, as too many streaming boxes now appear to do a
similar job.

Maybe its the challenge, but I like the idea of searching for stuff - like hide and seek.

Did you enquire about any options for enabling the 3.0m Winegard dish to be used for different satellites? It would be a shame to have such a good C-Band dish locked on the same single satellite all of the time?

Yeah. I was shown the way to alter angles etc.

Another generic app seems a lot more accurate, as it correctly identified where my current DSTV dish is pointing.

I will definitely play around and no doubt lose signals - but people seem v willing to help and u have to learn somewhere.

Thanks for all your help.

What are your coordinates where the dish is to go, Port Elizabeth or somewhere else ?

Contours of the various footprints will give you an idea of what you can, and cannot catch with a ten footer, C and Ku band.

A digital inclinometer is a very useful tool for adjusting a dish elevation. There is quite a bit of choice but one with a magnetic plate on it is handy for holding it in place while you make any adjustments.

I was shown a digital inclinometer. it looked a v handy gadget, kept under lock and key.

I am a little confused by c-band and ku band signals, and how to interpret what dish will pick up what.

I think c-band transmits in the 3000-5000 mhz spectrum, but am really guessing for now what's possible to be picked
up in the East Cape.

Will experiment etc .. its a hobby after all.

I have pasted a couple of links below to one of the digital inclinometers I use. It is cheap, has a magnetic strip on the base and provides a readout to 0.05 degrees. It is accurate enough to use for alignment of a satellite dish, fixed or motorised.

Most satellite receivers can be configured using the menu structure to receive both C-Band signals and Ku-Band signals. Is the dish seller providing you with a satellite receiver or do you need to purchase one separately?

Got the pole transported to my house.

Will get a local tradesman to angle grind off the bolts and make a new plate to attach and form a base
in the hole/pour concrrete.

Tradespeople have mostly gone on holidays, but expect to have the C band dish delivered on Friday.

The presidents' cup golf appears to be on 7E, and the signal strength seems to indicate I should pick it up fairly easily.

I was given this receiver ? which will apparently allow me to insert the necessary codes.

I can't find any info about the receiver, but have a Vu+ receiver on the way as a back up.

The 3m dish has a history. Its been re-sold 4 times, the last occasion being 5 yrs ago, but its excellent quality.

The cost was finalized at $450. Installation extra etc.
