Can you manually enter/select, a frequency, on your receiver?
If so try moving your dish to 0.8W and use 11862 H 28000 DVB-S, this has Sky News, and BBC News, both FTA, Free to Air.
If you can't get any signal try switching to Diseqc 1.2, and use the receiver options ,to step your dish east, and west, to see if you can get any signal.

Ok. I have no channels in my channel list for 5.0w so I used the sat find function which allows you to enter a satellite and a transponder, USALS then moved the dish to the correct location. Interestingly it doesn't lock on. Iv tried "5w____12690V 29950" which I found in a list of strongest transponders. No luck with that one.

I tried the same with 0.8w on the suggested transponder and frequency to no avail.

According to Flysat, King of Sat and Lyngsat, the Symbol Rate for 12690 V is 27500 not 29500 so try that first.

Also, Can you do an Auto Scan (Blind Scan) on 5W?

Almost certainly the same (Different boxes, different nomenclature).

But I suggest first of all you scan 12690 V on 5W with the correct SR of 27500.

Done:

found 0 new services. It didn't lock on.

Which other sat's could I try that you might expect to be able to get in NW England with a 80/90cm dish?

The assumption made by the dishpointer app is that the dish is at ground level ..thus the obstacle locator if it suggests a height of 8.1 m at that distance is required ..requires that you then add the dishes height to the 8.1mtrs ..
Thus if your dish is actually at a height of say 5 mtrs ..
this would easily see over and obstacle at 8.1 mtrs at that distance..
The obstacle would have to be 8.1 + 5mtrs ..ie 13.1 mtrs tall..
So if you can guestimate the height of the tree ..and is less than 13.1 mtrs allowing say 1m then t'would have to be taller than 12 mtrs to be a problem.
No idea of your dish's actual height ..but you get the idea..

good luck

Try 8W:
Code:
http://www.lyngsat.com/Eutelsat-8-West-A.html
You can also try 5E
Code:
http://www.lyngsat.com/Astra-4A-and-SES-5.html

I'd forget 26E, with your dish size, and location, you mgiht not get the channels you want.

For 5E try 11766 H 27500 and 12073 H 27500.

Either your dish isnt aligned accurately enough or the strong 28E signals adjacent are swamping you.

Try for 12182H 16200 3/4

SR 16200 isnt used at 28E and 12182 is a nice strong signal off Badr 4.

Il have to re check everything at the weekend then.

I have a feeling its the elevation of the dish itself. The markings on the dish make no sense at all. They go from 30 - 60. I just pointed the dish at south and tilted the dish offset until I got a signal on the sat finder. When It went straight to Astra 1 and 2 and hotbird channels without tweaking I thought Id cracked it.

If that was the case, you wouldn't be getting Birds 30 deg E or W ...........

The Tree is almost certainly the problem.

As for the dish scale marking, I suspect you've got the bracket on upside down: The Scale you mention is for lower Latitudes and many dishes have a reversible bracket (with different scales for each orientation) so you can render a more suitable range of movement and associated scale effective.

Can you take a picture, of these trees, and upload it? It seems to be blocking at least from 5E to 5W. Did you check 8W? Perhaps you should also check 7E, 9E and 10E, to give us an idea of how much of the satellite arc you're missing.
