This is a new site for you to use to build your own custom satellites.xml files. it differs from the traditional sources as it allows you to build your satellites.xml files without the many many inactive transponders that you find on sites such as lyngsat. you can of course choose to keep these transponders in your files but by building a satellites.xml file without those "dead" transponders you will substantially speed up your scans as the box will not need to pause over those "dead" transponders.

give it a go and let us know what you think.

Code:
http://satellites-xml.org/

all credit for this goes to Huevos.

Unless I'm missing something, it's pretty much the same as _http://satellites-xml.eu, which has been around for ages.

indeed however if you read the description i posted you can choose to build your .xml to only contain "active" transponders. give it a go build a list for 16.0 east and do a scan.

This sounds very good and all efforts are appreciated but not being very tech savvy could someone explain how and in what circumstances is this used. Just wish to learn.

Thanks for that. It made my satelites.xml file twice smaller, so will take less time to scan all birds. Would be nice if all Africa, Middle East beams could be excludes as well, I mean to make satelites.xml even more precise, region-oriented.

This a good additional resource, always welcome something new.

In particular this provides the satellite name/position in the way that I prefer (position first) - see example below

satellites-xml.org - 19.2E Astra 1H/1KR/1L/1M/2C
satellites-xml.eu - Astra 1H/1KR/1L/1M/2C (19.2E)

In answer to your question, you would use an xml file to update your frequencies should you be missing some. This sometimes happens if you are using an old image on your linux receiver.
You can of course add them individually with your remote control or download a current xml file with them all on and ftp the file to var/etc into your linux receiver using Dreambox Control Centre. Hope this explanation has helped you understand this a little better.

Yes thank you Dave. So it is all to do with updating the software on a Linux receiver. I just have a normal FTA, not a dreambox or such like. Thanks for the explanation.

The filtering is completely different. And the contents of the created file varies quite a bit. There's an option to leave out C or Ku band transponders. Option to create a custom file based on user co-ordinates.

It's true what Pheonix says about speeding up scanning but that is really a side effect. I wrote this to complement the blindscan plugin in the new VIX image (not yet released). The idea is when it does a blindscan it skips the active channels so it only finds feeds (based on info in satellites.xml. This means you can scan a busy satellite like 10E, 7W, or 30W with hundreds of active channels and still just pull out the feeds. And also it is used to filter active transponders on adjacent satellites. For example you can scan 10E and tell it to ignore transponders known to be on 9E. To do this properly you need good data on active transponderson the same and neighbouring satellites.

Okay, I'll try it out in the Dreambox. It has an image with a blindscan plugin, although I usually use Crazyscan's blindscan with my TBS6925 PC card.

It is the blindscan plugin in the new VIX image I am talking about. No other blindscan plugin has those features. It's for the Vu+ Uno & Ultimo and the ET9x00.

I don't use a VU+ box. Anyway, this thread is for the Dreambox.

It shouldn't, satellites.xml is a generally purpose file, used by most linux decoders.

I think it is clear. This topic shouldn't be in the dreambox section (or not only in it).

it was placed in the dreambox section as there was no where fitting for it in the Vu section as this site does not really cater for other E2 based receivers barring a very small subsection. another reason was also that the satellites.xml file generated could indeed be used on any E2 receiver to speed up scan times which is what i was getting at. the other aspects of improved blindscan i did not mention as they were box and image dependent.

Question to author of this great product: How often you update database? And second question: On 36.0E Eutelsat 36A/36B there are circular and linear transponders, basically similar to C and Ku band they should be received with separate LNBs. How can I better make separation between Circular and Linear transponders?

hxxp://satellites-xml.eu claims to be updated daily. I don't know if that is true, but if it is why are the satellites/transponders duplicated at multiple positions? Take 3E, 5E, & 23E for example. Here's an example satellites.xml from that site that demonstrates this.
View attachment satellites.xml

Also with hxxp://satellite-xml.org the positions of all major satellite over European skies are fixed, and don't float about to keep aligned with Lyngsat, as this would cause havoc to users of Linux receivers as the positions would no longer correspond with the transponders in lamedb.
