Hiya peoples

I have browsed the forums here and gotten heaps of ideas and hopefullu learnt something as well. Hopefully this is not to far from the right posting place but here goes.

I am based in new zealand and i am wonderig if there is any major differences between the skycards the sky installers have to test a system and the cards they are issued to consumers.

I think I may have answered my own questions.

I managed to track down a lose lipped sky installer and i found out that the cards they are issues do not need to be paired with they set top boxes.

This leads me down a new path. I am assuming that if my i get my hands on one of those cards could i duplicate it? Is there still some other copy protection that thwart my efforts?

Does anyone know if there is a lot of difference between UK and New Zealand cards?

once again all and any input is greatly appreciated.

SKy New Zealand is broadcast in NDS-Videoguard and as such is probably totally secure.

I can just about guarantee the cards cannot be cloned/duplicated..

Pay up for a subscription or do without :D

BTW WHY have you posted in the 28E section???Your channels are on 160E. Thread moved to more appropriate section

so what makes those cards so hard to copy?

Are they proprietary cards? or is there some kind of copy protection on them? i know the units over here do not call home unless you request a pay per view event.

i mean surely if the set top box can read the card someone would have reverse engineered the unit so that one could read the data of the card to a pc or something.

i know i am just showing my ignorance here but in theory it seems rather simple..then again its just a theory

The box only needs to read a small section of the card, they are multilayered and cannot be copied or reverse engineered, at least not without the sort of equipment that only major corporations can afford.

Videoguard is 3rd generation technology. Hobby grade kit just cant do it.

As the years have gone by the first thing the pay tv providers tightened up on was the cloning.

Forget it - either you pay up or you do without. Your choice.

Edit - beaten to it! :D

i am most interested in this.
Paying for it is not a problem. getting ripped off to get a second digital box is what annoys me.

i think i will get me a little hobby kit from JayCar and have a play with smart cards just so that i can familiarize myself with the technology.
