Although I joint this forum quite a while ago, only recently I have the time to look more into this forum, as in the past.

Why - I’m retired now.

What strikes me here is, some junior members just posting a question and expect (according to their writing style) that someone here tells them from A to Z everything they want to know …. including (almost) Ohms law.

Over and over again the same questions. Nobody bothers to look at a footprint to see if there is a slight chance of receiving that satellite.

I started 7 or 8 Years back to try to receive signals from satellites. So I have some experience and some knowledge accumulated over the years.

I’m not saying that the youngsters of today must go through the same learning curve, but some self-gained knowledge is necessary, otherwise they will depend always on some ones knowledge.

My point is, could you introduce a newbie’s corner, where one can read and gain some knowledge. As some articles are on the Internet, maybe you have to get the copyrights to publish some articles here.

I feel really sorry sometimes for your senior members or moderators to repeat and repeat the same thing. There answer would be – after having that newbie’s corner running, “… please read through items x, y and z and that’s why a reception at your location is not possible”.

I can contribute to that corner, but I have not the sound theoretical knowledge of microwave transmissions and receptions.

I’m a familiar with power electronics (kilo Volts, kilo Amps …..).

I agree nopfusch, we have considered this in the past, but for one reason or other we have not done it, or at least not to such a degree. We do have the FAQs section and various stickies in the different sections, but perhaps one simply for the absolute beginner would make a valuable addition. Will have a chat about possible format and get back to you tomorrow. :)

Thanks, input is always appreciated.

Hi nopfusch
Yes, this is what I always thought. That's why I made the idiot guide in the Dreambox section - and indeed it does reduce a lot of repeat questions. But, to make such a guide for every section is a big task, and takes up quite a bit of time. But I do hope that we will have a few more idiot guides in some of the more popular sections. I hope you will add your thing about power in one of the future guides, always good to know about those things!

In my homecountry is also the Kraut sauer and Wurst gebraten. I'm an Austrian (Grazer) and since 37 Years 'down here'.
Well, I would be very surprised, that we come into tha stage where we have to use to kilo -Amps and -Volts.
UHF- milli Amps follow other rules, but one is never too old to learn something new.

Well, this is an age old subject. Not confined to this forum. People join forums for many reasons, I'm sure. The main one, I guess, could be to exchange ideas with like minded people. Another could be to gain knowledge or problem solve. Yet another could be to provide knowledge gained from experience (oft times painful, oft times costly) for others in a charitable fashion. Not everyone knows everything from birth. Navigating a forum which, in itself is nought but a cylcone of contributions, thoughts, questions, answers and guesswork, is an aquired skill. My own posts on but two subjects are riddling the forum as if fired from a twelve bore. I access this forum because I feel comfortable doing so and will be forgiven for mild nuisances brought about by inexperience. The rules state paragraphs which guide contributors to be orderly, but we're all human and all differ in expertise, skill and experience. As a lecturer I am qualified to comment on stuff not happening as we'd like in a learning environment.I agree, this forum could benefit from a little order and decorum but what environment couldn't ?

Hi Supapete, welcome to you as well!
"I access this forum because I feel comfortable doing so" - well said!
It is a little bit in the nature of internet forums that they will be a bit disorderly. Especially in forums where one can post without moderators deciding if it is going to be posted or not. Also, as we aer dealing with satellite technology we attrackt a wide range of people from all sorts of countries, speaking all sorts of languages. Some have problems understanding the rules at first, and some may post things that offend others purely because they are not aware that it causes offence/different culture etc. But in the end of the day, what sets this forum apart from MANY others is that we insist on the tone to be friendly, we don't patronise any newbie even if he hasn't got a clue about anything, and we don't speak in code insider language. I think a few users come and look into the forum once in while even if they haven't got an immediate problem - just because it is a nice place to visit...
And regarding the organising, well, we will have a go at it but without panic

:) You are right in many respects but from a newbies (although not youngster) point of view its not a question of not looking but knowing what to look for. I have a post today asking about H to H motors. I have read up quite a bit but trying to find out the pros and cons is difficult. I can searc Google for ages but often need the point of view of "those in the know" and they are in here. If I type in H to H motors in search in here I get 4 pages of posts with answers. I can trawl through them but some I fail to understand what they are on about. Maybe a section in here for "Newbies" to ask stupid questions and those who it irritates can avoid it. I want the best because I do not want to regret what I buy and change it later. I would rather waste a £100 quid in going OTT. Hopefully, one day I may be able to answer posts from newbies in here. Then I can say thanks to all those who put up with my stupid questions and enabled me to become part of the Satellite community. :-wave

We are quite happy to see newbies post questions an any relevant section, the only time people become irritated, is when there is an answer to the question on the same page and the member obviously hasn't made the slightest attempt to look. :)

We (the mods) have discussed this and have a good idea on format, but the problem is the time it takes to do it, keep watching this space, something will materialise, but perhaps not until after Christmas. :)

As a newbie, I would love to see a Newbie's corner on this forum. I spent quite a few hours trolling the net to find some basic information about satellite tv. Any beginner's guide should include a link to Duwgati's site. He has a really complete introduction to this whole thing. Also, it would be great if people could point to reliable sources of keys. I was able to find just about everything that I needed in this forum but it did take a lot of my boss' time. Thanks and keep up the good work.

A lot of what you ask is as you say already here, and things like links to key sites are already in the Big Link section and a sticky thread "So you want Keys", Duwgati's site has been in the Links section for as long as I can remember. The type of Newbie Guide I invisage is more a run down on the overall hobby, with sections on dishes, motors, LNBs etc.

I find the idea of a noob's corner a good one,as a complete novice to sat tv,how on earth do you search for something if you haven't got a clue what your searching for!!
Maybe you could put in ideal starter kits, what to buy, avoid these like the plague etc.
But in my experience,if you don't ask,you don't get,but isn't this what forums are all about,asking questions?
If nobody asked any questions then forums would be non exsistent.

Hi Oily.

If saomebody is starting in this hobby, then either they have an inkling of what they want to receive, or what their family might want from it.

I always ask the two questions
1) What do you want
2) What languages

as a basis for selling / installing something suitable, the other questions come sometime afterwards
(what type of house/planning permission/garden/trees etc)

A noob is a noob, and all their enquiries will be different, they may or may not have an existing system, they may have bought a kit from Lidl, they may be trying to fix something on behalf of a friend, they may not have a technical background, they may not really grasp written English.
So its really down to the amount of information that the noob posts in the first place, rather than everyone here trying to best guess the reason for the enquiry.

I would however favour a better highlighted search facility on the forum, maybe one with big arrows and a sign saying 'noobs here'.

Hi all.

By way of introduction I am a complete newbie. I have worked in IT for many years including networking and WiFi and am here because we're paying a small fortune for satelite and would like to learn from scracth, if anyone has the time and inclination, how to do this.

Obviously I know I need a dish, a receiver and a TV but apart from that I'm lost. I also need channels in ENglish and Spanish.

Flame me if you like but we all started somewhere and I'm sure I'll be able to help others with IT issues as I'm Microsoft registered and put in the odd network or two in my time...

Welcome to the forum Harlequin.

I'm sure that if you read the whole of this thread you'll see the irony of your post and the responses.

Unfortunately the much discussed Newbies Corner never happened. Probably because it's too big a subject and, as we're all volunteers here, would require a massive investment of time.

I'll give a brief response. Firstly, in order to receive ALL the channels including the Beeb, ITV and C4 you'll need a large (90cm upwards) dish depending on where you are. For instance, down in the Costa Brava you'll need a 1.3m dish but it isn't a linear progression in sizes across the country. There are hotspots and coldspots which affect the size needed.

If you're buying your dish in Spain be aware that they measure the size vertically which off-set dishes sound bigger. The rest of the world measures the size horizontally as this is the real effective size (off-set dishes are oval, prime focus are round). There are a lot of cheap dishes available that need a LOT of time to set up and, unless you're careful, a 1.8m dish will only perform like a 1.5m dish. This thread http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/fringe-reception-general/172830-prime-focus-maplins-any-good.html will give you a good idea on people's opinions of this.
