Now that UKTV have bagged themselves another decent Freeview slot (their business model usually involves getting the channel onto Freeview first), i'm wondering which channel they will use it for to take FTA on satellite and add to Freesat.

I think it could well be GOLD.

Until a freesat pid appears on one of the UKTV channels or there is an official announccement there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever any further channels are going fta. Its speculation nothing more nothing less.

I think this is plausible though.

It’s already known that a Freeview licence has been issued for GOLD, which will most likely take the stream currently occupied on DTT by CCX TV.

It would make sense for it to also go FTA on satellite in that case (depending on contracts with BSkyB for encryption).

Whether it also then joins Freesat, I guess we shall have to wait and see!

I can't see it happening. UKTV gets paid for with Sky and Virgin subscriptions, the more popular channels that move to Freesat the more people will ditch Sky and Virgin. more so with unemployment rising and many channels on catch up.

Maybe it is wishful thinking.

Ofcom are now saying that the Freeview licence for GOLD was a mistake via an email reply asking for confirmation of this new licence. I'm not totally convinced as, with the quality of information & advice that one gets these days from organisations, it could be a mistake in saying it was a mistake!

It's also been pointed out to me that this could also be deliberate misinformation if they don't want the information in the public domain. It's understood that Ofcom can defer the publication of some information if it's deemed to be commercially sensitive. Perhaps releasing the information was the mistake.

I wouldn't believe anything that UKTV say abouf it as they are denying any connection to CCXTV, which is untrue.

Maybe Sky are going to kick GOLD out of the Sub Club? If they do, you can be sure that Virgin Media will follow suit given their past dealings with UKTV.

Having said that, I was surprised to find that it could be GOLD going FTA. If the Freeview licence is a genuine mistake I can see it being Alibi or Eden.

It is speculation, yes, but going by the way that UKTV have done things in the past I think it plausible. Whichever channel goes FTA, I think it's almost a given that it will end up on Freesat given the BBC involvement in both companies.

Maybe the programming on GOLD is to be downgraded in favour of Britbox??

It's all maybe, speculation, could be, perhaps, moving, upgrading, downgrading.

Most of the programs shown on Gold are repeated on Yesterday FTA.

That's why I think it's a possibility. Maybe Sky are doing a Virgin Media and no longer want to pay for it because of this?

GOLD is not the channel it once was when it was UK Gold, but it is still a strong brand that UKTV would want to capitalise on. Maybe an ideal FTA place to advertise to those wanting the material of old a la Britbox??

That's the very nature of the concept of speculation based on limited facts. No idea what you mean with the upgrading/downgrading comment??

I think it's pretty certain that another channel will be coming/going FTA to DTT/satellite/Freesat. UKTV wouldn't have played games and gone to the expense of getting channel 23 on Freeview just to put a timeshift channel on it ahead of it's parent.

Channel 23 was also the position of UK Gold on analogue satellite and could be another nostalgic link.
