Seeing as the thread hasn't been updated allow me. So I metered either end of the cable then manually turned the motor (Jaeger SMR 99G or similar) using the screw holding down the mag wheel. Everything checked out including the reed switch, voltage as expected at the motor end and the motor wasn't seized. The fault is a knackered bearing, judging by the lumps of metal that fell out of the cover and the smell it looks like it broke, jammed the motor which got very hot and stinky.

The Jaeger is still available around £100 but I've suggested to Dave he might want to take a chance on getting an 8" actuator from HM Sat for €25 and just swapping out the motor section where it fits onto the bevel gear attached to the dish mount. I've got one of the 8" actuators for elevation on my 1.8M and the size and appearance seem identical.

Yes I guess I will order one of these, I see pulsat still have a reasonable stock of new Jaeger 99G's btw so tempting but I know it's not nessasary

Hopefully we can put this one to bed. Dave went with my original suggestion and bought a DARL 3608 actuator from hm-sat-shop for just under €24. The motor section is as I suspected exactly the same size as the original Jaeger SMR 99G, the only difference being the connection between the motor and the gearbox. The steel spigot protroding from the Jaeger gearbox is about 1MM too thick for the nylon socket on the new motor but a large file had it fitting in about 10 minutes with no play and a good fit against the gear casing. The only small issue is the westerly limit switch which has no real adjustment apart from the default position and 180° round the nylon shaft so a software limit must be set.

Hope this may help anyone else who comes up against a similar problem.

That can be solved by taking the motor of the gearbox , let it rotate for a while and put it back (trial and error) till youfind the right position .
