Have you used the dish with another receiver?

no, i haven't. although it's a brand new lnb, a brand new satellite cable, a brand new PCI card. what should I do. usually if i haven't got a rotator what's the way of acquiring some data from a satellite? where might the problem be? is there a way of scanning what I might access?

New to the game myself, but I set up my m8s system last Friday, I found it easier to set the dish to true south, then move it to 1degree west, then with the setuppc software open on the pc I adjusted the face of the dish in very small increments. the m8 then yelled out when a strong signal was appearing on the software. you need a suitable transpoder frequency in the software for Thor but it only took us an hour of fiddling on and that was due to his motor knocking the compass out.
Hope this helps but like I said a Newbie myself

How did you set the dish up?

Did you use a meter?

Were you getting a signal when you set it up but nothing on the PC?

I've got an old metre, but its pretty unreliable, no I just made sure I had a true south bearing and then moved the dish 1 degree west (the motor had a display in degrees to guide me) then while my m8 watched the computer screen I adjusted the face of the dish, when It showed 99% I locked the dish fittings. hope this helps

So did u have a Skystar2 as well. And where you using the Setup4PC function? And if you had a motor, this would mean that you didn't adjust the dish manually, did you?

Yeh ss2 and motorised dish, but the same applies to a fixed dish the only difference was with the motorised dish I manually drove the dish from true south to 1degree west, if it was a fixed dish I would've moved it by hand!
the setupforpc programme was running with a transponder frequency for thor, when I had adjusted the face of the dish the display turned green, showing the signal level.
You'll also need to look up your latitude and longitude this will give u an idea of your dish setup, I'm in the NE of England so latitude 55 degrees and 1.5 degrees longitude, if you find out yours you then look at the adjuster on the dish and adjust it to suit, in my case it was 55 degrees, when I then moved the dish West 1 degree I added 1.5 degrees this compensated for my global position. If you need to find out your position have a look in the links section I think its called Lyngasats you'll find it there.

thor at 1 west is the right satellite for setting up a motorised system. Once you get a picture on thor the rest will get easier, you then have to move the dish very slowly in small increments while constantly scanning for the next satellite which you would expect to find west and east of thor on 1 west. Make sure you have all free to air transponder information on each satellite after thor into the sat program you are using and tuned in accordingly as it is a digital signal and you will not know if you are on it otherwise unless you are trying to pick up the analogue signal on one of those old satellite receivers which is what my mate used to do then change the lnbs around and have it back to digital. i used a meter to find 1 west then just went from there, it was a cheap bleeper thing that made a high pitched sound when it found the sat, cheap and nasty but it worked, i had the lnb connected to it then back out the other end continuing on into the pc lnb input on the sat card. Check lyngsat.com for satellite info on 1 west and then look west or east for the next satellite and program in the free to air channels and take it from there.
