Second post re: help in deciding what receiver to chose but no replys..c'mon please help out a novice

Very much a case of it depending on what functions you want, which sats, what CAMs, etc. etc.

What one person thinks is the dogs, another rates as the dogs-doo-doo.

I find that the best advice to give in this situation is to get people to have a good read though 'What Satellite' magazine or similar, and read some user reviews on some of the bigger websites. You tend to get a more balanced and objective view that way.

There certainly is no 'best' box.

I choose my receiver by looking through the latest what sat mag too. it gives you spec and allows you to make a more informed decision. it also depends on whether you want to watch encrpyted channels or just free to air channels only.
There is also a mini-review section in what sat which i found helpful but the most helpful thing was to look on this forum at peoples comments and problems with various receivers and what they were looking for from a receiver.

To be honest I would say the Dreambox is a very good receiver if you can put up with the learning curve that goes with it.

I had a televes box before this one and there's no way it can compete with the Dreambox.

The Dreambox can be customized pretty much however you want it to be because it runs on Linux but *some* knowledge of Linux / reading a lot of tutorials is a requirement. Like, you need to know how to use Telnet and Chmod and FTP (fairly easy, sorry to patronate you if you know this).

If you go with a Dreambox make sure you have a good day or two to spare on it because you will need it! Either that or ask the suppliers to install an image for you (I'm using the latest Hydra) and it worked straight out of the box although I'm not sure if many suppliers will do this though.

The Technomate are meant to be good receivers too, my friend has one with a Dragon Cam and has no problems with channels at all. I've not seen it in person though but if he says it's good I'm sure it is.

I would also go with newbie123 and say reading a satellite mag will be invaluable for information and it also gives you a good indication of what the price of the equipment is. :-righton

Have you considered a PC card option ?
There are some very good PCI options out there depending on your
home stack and if you can run an extra few cables (2 or 3)
between your comp and your scren.
Also this option is fairly flexible.

Just something else to consider .

If you want a really good receiver that has a years warranty to boot,Has most channels as well as f t a. It works without a cam or a card, then i suggest a Nextwave2500,it has at least 5000 channels,usals,ect,ect,
