I get the noise with and without stuff connected to the amps.
Short the power amp inputs to ground\amp chassis.
And try grounding the amp chassis to a known good ground point.
Like this the amps should be 'quite close to' completely silent (even if using headphones), in case of vintage equipment maybe just some low level, stable & quite unobtrusive hiss.

The drop at 16 kHz in the spectrum looks like an effect of a digital filter, maybe in the recording equipment or the transfer to a flac file. Strange, as the sample rate of the flac file is 48 kHz.

I disagree, it's a good recipe for creating ground loops.

Chris: So, was it always like this?
I read in another thread it's a Quad Elite.
What if you replace the link with a pair of rca cables?
What if you disconnect the pre-amp completely?
Looking at pictures, there's a knob on the back of the mono blocks. Are those for sensitivity? What if you turn them down? They might not need to be on max for the pre-amp to saturate the mono blocks.

It has always been there as far as I can remember, but recently it has got worse :-(

Can wifi cause these noises? As next door have have moved there wifi router.

Yes it is a quad elite.

Not tried that one yet, will try it later, when I have a min.

Tried that, and had just the mono blocks connected to the speakers and it's still there but very very faint, plug everything back in and some thing seems to boost it. Loudest of the lot is on the record input.

No, the knobs on the back are for channel settings. You can use it for a 5.1 kit if you wish,
Channel 1 is left
Channel 2 is right

Talking about testing 2 separate monoblocks, impossible to produce any ground loop by shorting their inputs or grounding them.
Procedure is to test if anything changes in the monoblocks noise characteristics when ground is applied to amp input or chassis.

Offtopic, but speaking of monoblocks, here's my 2 x Bogen 10w, only amps I've kept from a former tubeamp collection. Original (apart from carefully recapped here and there), they sound great.

They look like a nice set there :-) I bet they are worth quite a bit of €

What would make a good ground source?

Maybe worth something because of being a pair and nice condition, but value far, far away from McIntosh etc.
More 'joy of looking at tube glow' then $ :O)

"What would make a good ground source?"
Can't help there, don't know the house or electrics.
