Noob question about setanta on freview

OK i need some help with this setanta and red hot thing.
I understand how to use the codes and obtain a release code for my freeview standalone box, but where do the codes come from?
I dont mean what websites are they posted on, but how are they obtained in the first place?
Is it a complex process or can anyone (with the right 'tools') do it?

Well AFAIK data stream logging would be the only way but I am only really guessing there. One thing is for sure it is a black art and you will not get anyone answering you on an open forum

The old guide is a bit out of date so I'm currently re-writing it,
