Most of the news channels are carrying rolling coverage of a big fire in the roof of Notre Dame :(

wow, looks bad. A restoration worker forgot his Gauloise? Most frenchmen have zero concept of fire dangers, and fire prevention\detection\extinguishing equipment (if any) is outdated, underdimensionned, out of order, or missing completely. Just my impression after living there on and off for a dozen years.

And "Macron cancels planned speech to the nation due to the fire", so must be a big disaster.

The big spire has gone in the last few minutes & most of the roof has collapsed. The flames have spread along the roof line up to the front towers.

It *appears* to have been centred around the scaffolding being used for the renovations but thats only speculation on my part.

The end of the Paris Gothic Cathedral :(
The Paris Fire Brigade cannot reach the center of the fire with their equipment as they are not high enough or have enough water pressure,

Donald Trump had a good suggestion:-
"So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out,
Must act quickly!"

A bit late now it has almost gone.

By the time the fire is out there not going to be much left apart from the outer walls. And if the fire at the Glasgow school of art in 2018 was anything to go by the walls moved and some parts had to be taken down before they fell down

Thankfully, with the hard work of the firebrigade, most of the scaffolding is saved for future generations to enjoy and venerate.

Seriously, this feels real bad, have been there several times, what a construction (it was).
If there 'needed' to be some major fire, should have been some ugly business skyscraper instead.
And was supposed to be Macron's big night and moment of truth, to adress the population to present all his new plans and grand designs for the future of France... became his big night indeed.

Now, let's wait for some renovation work to start on the Louvres, managing to burn up Mona Lisa would be a worthy continuation.

Silly idea. They might damage it further. Or kill someone.

Questions arising, how could it be possible for the fire to catch like if it was all built from straw. Those very large wood beams would be quite some job to set alight. Did someone stock large leaky barrels of gasoline up there ???

800 years of carbon build up on them? And they will be tinder dry of course having had 8 centuries drying out. Look how fast York Minster roof burned (1994) or Windsor Castle (1992)

All it needs is for someone to have been careless with something like a gas soldering iron or even a spotlight left too close to a flammable surface (eg tarp?)

Maybe they were treating all that wood with flammable products for preserving it for more 800 years, or to burn it all down in a couple hours!

Well as they were already well on with restoration work, a lot of the art and artifacts had already been removed for safekeeping, staff had time to remove some others and still get everyone out safely and the stonework has been saved by the 500 firemen attending the incident. President Macron has launched an international restoration appeal already and has vowed to rebuild the iconic cathedral.

On the contrary those beams are so old and dry that they will burn like hell almost like fossil fuel.

^^^ agree, once the fire has got hold and heat built up it would be lightning fast and devastating, it looked much like a fire in a box of matches!
But was thinking of the initial starting, must have needed a somewhat sustained influence to get hold at the very beginning.
Investigation results will be interesting.

Notre Dame was always a draughty church, and the sheer volume of space under the roof means once started a fire would be self perpetuating.
