Afternoon

Has anyone else met the problem that I have now met with an external HDD (have actually tried several) plugged into one of the SX88's USB ports?
- I have tried the HDD formatted to FAT 32 with the Default, 32kb and 64kb sectors - and yet the SX88 Storage menu shows it to have "Partition 1 - Abnormal" in both cases, and I can't understand why.

Anyway, if then I try to record something, I get the message "Please insert USB HDD!" :(

NB: FAT 32 formatting was done with the Minitool Partition Wizard - the same as had been done some months ago before I moved the HDD I was then using downstairs to the SX88+.

BTW: I updated the f/w with "octagon_sx88_v1.04.96_20190729.mupg" directly from the Octagon forums site and that made no difference because the result was the same as with the previous 1.04.95 version that was on it before.

I also tried to check the SX88 part of the Octagon forum site for info on this issue but could not find anything specific.

Doesn't the SX88 have it's own native formatting option?

Have you checked the partition type ID? Windows and Linux don't care if the type doesn't match the the actual format but my Xoro box and my Edision Primo won't accept that.

Formatting a partition with mkdosfs etc in linux does not change the type ID to the correct one.

TBH, I never noticed one, but neither did I look for one - until now, and, having had a good look-around the menus, I can't see one :(

TBH, I'm not sure which type of partition I should be looking for! OTOH, seems you have figured this out, and so please can you advise me?

Thx in advance.

What I'do (assuming you have nothing on the disk that you may want to keep):

In minitool delete all partitions, then create 1 new partition using all the unallocated space.
"Probably" the box would accept ntfs, so I'd try that first. If ntfs no go, just delete the partition and create a fat partition.

That said, the box itself should have some form of format option somewhere.

@4wd
Thx - will try those "options" in an hour or so.

OTOH: maybe someone else can find a box formating option - because I can't :(

Well - some very strange behaviour!

The 1TB disk I'm playing with is partitioned into 2 - both around 500GB - and I originally formatted them both in FAT32, and the Rx recognized neither of them.

Then, on @4wd's suggestion, I formatted Partition 1 as NTFS whilst leaving Partition 2 as FAT32 - and the Rx then seemed to partially recognize the disk but when I checked the Storage menu it stated that Partition 1 was "Abnormal" but Partition 2 was "Normal"!!!!

Then I tried a recording or two - and it seemed to record to BOTH partitions at the same time!! OTOH, it seemed to lock the Rx up and the only way to get out of that was to disconnect the power as it would not respond to the remote.

So, I reformatted Partition 1 as FAT32 - and that was "back to square 1", i.e. when I tried to record I got the "Please insert USB HDD" message again.

That being the case, I'm now going to try the HDD I originally wanted to use - which is an old 320GB - but only as 1 partion formated to NTFS.

Edited: THAT seemed to work, as the Partition is reporting as being "Normal" and it doesn't lock up when I change channels, but it still does it when I try to view recording still in progress

Seems to go against all I've read about needing to use FAT32 for USB HDDs, and although I can understand why it won't let me change sats, not why it locks up when I try to view a recording still in progress!!

I'll see what happens slightly more longterm!

I can only help a bit because I probably have none of the software that you are using, but I can give you more of the story... The partition type is a single byte value in the partition table in the MBR for each partition.
For NTFS it is 07 hex and for FAT32 it is 0C hex.
There are other values that are used for FAT32 depending on the circumstances. e.g. EF hex is an EFI boot partition.

I think generally that if you create a new partition and format it in one go with a disk management tool then it will write the correct partition type to the MBR.

If you REFORMAT an existing partition to a different filesystem then the value is not changed in the MBR

What actually happens probably depends on the particular software you are using. I don't know of any user type software for reading and modifying the values.

With a hard disk the simplest way is to delete the partition and recreate it whenever you change the format type.

Since these Octagon/Edision boxes automount all of the partitions when you plug the device in, if one partition fails it may interfere with mounting any others.

I recommend, as suggested above, that you start again with just one newly created partition on the drive. Don't reformat to a different filesystem unless you can find some software for modifying the values in the MBR.

@LateAdopter

Many thanks for the detailed info - I have now restarted the process with the original 320GB HDD formatted as one NTFS partition, but (for the sake of a few minutes work) I will now (on a Win 10 PC) delete that partition and format it again as you suggest.

BTW1: FYI, "Minitool Partition Wizard Free" is available here if you would like to have a play with it
What I did notice about that s/w is that the formatting process only seems to do a "Quick Format" and not a "Full Format".

BTW2: I think the lockup issues stem mainly from the fact that the SX88 and similar boxes have fairly "low power" processors that are not that "quick"(as evidenced by the relatively long times it/they take to change channels on the same satellite)- and so that results in lockups if you try to call up many functions too quickly.

Not noticed slow channel change, or lockups, on my Edision Primo
