OK, calling myself an Old Timer because I've been out of the Country for the last 13 years and haven't played with satellite since that time.
Before leaving I had 3 receivers - an old analogue unit, a Sky unit, and a "digital" receiver. Don't remember the make / model. Had a 1.2m dish in the garden and 2 fixed dishes mounted on the wall. Loved catching SNG feeds which is what I used the 1.2m dish for. The fixed dishes handled 13E and 19E at the time.

I now see that Sky are using 28E, and Hotbird is still going strong at 13E. Moving into a rental now I'm back, so won't have opportunity to run a large dish, but would like to get caught up with current technology.

My goal is to be able to watch HD UK TV (Freesat channels) and be able to record. I'd like to mess with some other features that E2 units provide, although I don't even know what all the features are yet!
I also have been running a local media server and using a LibreElec Kodi box for streaming. Have a lot of x265 10-bit content. So if I could leave that box for the bedroom and use the Sat receiver to run Kodi that would be fabulous.

So, I'd like a receiver that would allow me PVR features (am happy to install hard drives).
Don't want a slow processor.

Am seeing multiple recommendations for Octagon SX88+ but can't find the processor specs :-( Anyone know if it is a 600MHz box, or over 1GHz?
I assume the SF8008 would be a more powerful box.
I see the Mutant HD51 is being recommended as well as the Edision PRIMO IP S2.

What would recommendations be for me?
And can anyone list the firmware providers of E2 software so I can look them all up?

Although I'll not be doing much feed hunting to begin with, I would like to in the future. Don't think I need 4K. Would like at least 2 tuners though.

Would also like to know what the multistreaming thing is if anyone could point me to a resource that would explain it.

Thanks for helping a returning satzapper!
Happy viewing...

Sky started on 28.2 East when they first went digital, in the last millennium. Where exactly have you been ?

Been over in North America.
Perhaps I had one of my dishes on 28.2 back in the day as I left in '05. Can't quite remember now!

Not much to multistream, it's just a group streams compressed into one channel, so you need a specialist receiver to receive them.
There are quite a few on 5W, take a look at 12606 onwards, in the link below:

It should be noted that Multistream-capable boxes like the Edision Primo and Octagon SX88+ can be had for 50 sovs.

We have loads of topics about them.

Good luck with the French and Italian lessons!

Well I used to be able to speak French - wouldn't mind brushing up a bit!

When it comes to the receivers though, the SX88+ doesn't mention E2, but does say it is a Linux OS. The SF8008 specifically says it is E2 & gives CPU specs. Kodi support looks good. It also seems to be Multistream compatible.
But would I have to stick to the original Octagon OS, or would all images be able to use the native Kodi media player with hardware support?

Are the £50 receivers actually decent? Again the Edison doesn't specifically say it is an E2 receiver. Should I be concerned about that?

I've been reading around the forums trying to get a grasp of the current technology. Feeling a bit behind. I enjoy tinkering (run linux on my computers) and enjoy learning. Just seems like there is a lot for me to catch up on!

I'm not a fan of running too many things on a Box, if you want Kodi I'd get something else for that, something like a cheap Android Box or a Fire Stick.

The Octagon SX88+ and Edision Primo IP S2 run Linux but they do not run and cannot run Enigma2, however they are great boxes, my preference is the Edision Primo IP S2 out of those two. However these can accept E2 Channel Lists.

For E2, a lot of us use the Mutant HD51 and are very happy with them.

The SF8008 looks interesting, however it only has one satellite input (Not sure if that makes a difference to your use) And does not take an internal hard drive, but it's priced well for what you get.

I already have an Android TV box that I put LibreElec on for Kodi. It works a treat for the h265 material I have.
Would just be nice to have 1 box to handle both, then I don't have to train the wife in switching techniques

Since there is just a fixed dish in the rental property, I might pick up a few extra LNBs and try a multiLNB setup. Hate the thought of not being able to receive from multiple sats!!!

What are the main advantages of an E2 box?
