The writing system not only requires the ability to focus , but to heat up the embedded layer. There were two temperatures, one for burning (higher ) and one for erasing (lower) which I think are the same on both CD and DVD
Mind blowing really ...
..and dont even get me started on dual or multilayer R/W...
Eeeek:eek:

To complicate the issue further what do combo units use - I have several

Combo BD, HD DVD, DVD & CD player
BD, DVD & CD player
HD DVD, DVD & CD player
DVD & CD recorder
Desktop BD, HD DVD, DVD & CD ROM drive
Desktop BD< DVD & CD rewriter
USB BD, DVD & CD rewriter
USB BD ROM, DVD & CD rewriter
USB HD DVD, DVD & CD rewriter
USB HD DVD ROM, DVD & CD rewriter

Plus there are more disc formats - VCD, CD i, CD G, SACD all requiring appropriate players probably most are software rather than hardware differences.

Still compiling the list, there must be thirty to thirty-five in theback of the lockup.

Taking pictures as I go along.

There is one unit that is dismantled as another 'client' wanted to look at the worm drive for a project. This may be the BENQ unit as it was the last one on the bench.

If you do have time post an image of the internals of what you have (I'll do the same tonight) and compare them.

OK, this link shows the six drives that look the most promising so far ( I filtered out the DVD ROM drives and CD/R units as there is a question mark on the tracking and laser types).
There are more right at the back of the shed, and I cannot find the BENQ unit though I'm sure there is another one in there somewhere, but it might be another CD only unit.

Let me know and I'll box them all up for you, they are of little use to me as I'm certain I can still retrieve one or two if needed.

Sounds like the guide peg's probably slipped out of the tray's guide rail, can be popped back in with a bit of man handling, or it's that the mechanism has skipped a gear or two (from impatient people shoving the tray back in or pulling it out in the hopes of speeding up the process), either way, it usually can be sorted if they haven't actually broken any plastic... :)

Little point in trying to fix the mechanics of the unit ...as my customer complained of non disc recognition prior to mechanical failure (as mentioned earlier)..
So most likely disc motor failure or more likely laser failure.
To chase this fault on this drive I feel would be a pointless waste of time.
ie ..a minimum of 2 faults here..
You have to appreciate that the owners of the DVR unit are field operatives working with drain inspection cameras and care little about careful handling or using 'kid gloves' ..
Most of the equipment brought to me from this company is just tossed into the back of a van and spend many hours being thrown about and abused in this way..
Sometimes units arrive seized an full of crud ...or smashed pcbs and necks broken off crt monitors etc..
you get the idea..
Used and operated by lower life forms who have little respect for delicate equipment and treat it like it grows on trees..

Been there in the past. You need to be tested to the full (for working in enclosed spaces), work with really nasty chemicals, ignore your sense of smell most of the time, and know when to pass on responsibilty when something's not right (drugs, needles, body parts as well as invasions of the real lower life forms).

Things may have changed since I was in the business but I have respect for somebody that crawls into a septic tank or battles their way through fatbergs in a major sewer.

Indeed ...much respect to anyone that actually crawls into that environment ..
not a place I'd want to visit...
..though I suspect these guys dont actually get in there ...but certainly the inspection equipment does ...and it aint cheap ..
I once had a self levelling camera head on my bench whose seals had gone ..
The resulting damage was terminal ...and a replacement ..according to Dave ..who owns the company was a cool £1200 ...
Eeeek..

OK, boxed up. I'll get the correct weight tomorrow morning but I think it is just under 3kgs all in.

Do you need anything else that I might find lying around before I seal it up ? Id estimate about three more drives would fit inside if I remove the majority of the packaging, or perhaps a bottle of plonk.
