My Satellite Setup
Hotbird 80cm dish
My Location
London
Hello,

I've recently bought an 80cm dish and have been trying to set it up to receive hotbird channels, however I seem to only be able to receive about 50 channels.

I live in London and have set the elevation at 30 degrees, the polarisation at about 10 degrees, and pointed the satellite to about 166 degrees. After some trial and error, i managed to get some signal, so i optimised it by changing the elevation, polarisation, and direction to ensure i get the maximum signal (90% signal, 80% quality on the transponder i had selected). However most other transponders seem to have 0 signal, hence I don't receive many other channels. In fact, the channels that I want which are on this transponder have not come up on the results.

Any advice on how I can set it up to receive all the hotbird channels? As you can tell, I haven't really used specialist hardware to detect the signal, so not sure if this is the reason and that I would get much more channels if I set it up using this hardware.

Please bear in mind, that as a test, I followed the Astra settings for dish direction, and managed to pick up hundreds of channels on Astra, so its just hotbird that I can't seem to get.

Any advice on how I can set this up, or is it possible that I must have a bigger dish?

Thanks

It's more than probable you're not on Hotbird.

Please list a selection of the Channels you have managed to get.

Check on Lyngsat, or Kingofsat, also check that your frequencies, and transponder details, are correct:

Inedit TV is on Thor at 0.8W!

You need to move the dish 14 degrees further East and reduce the Elevation slightly.
That 80cm is more than big enough for Hotbird, one you've found it.

Edit: Taking Channel Hopper's reply into account, start by moving the dish 8 degrees further East , twiddle for a signal then tell us what Channels you get.

Thanks guys, you were spot on! I moved it further eastwards and after a few tries, i seem to have about 600 hotbird channels (they contain the main channels i wanted).

One further question if i may, should I try and tweak it slightly to try and improve the signal and get more channels, or is it the case once I've gotten hundreds of channels this means its locked to the satellite and no further tweaks are required?

Thanks

Scroll through and find a Channel, if there is one, that's weaker than the rest, possibly on the threshold of lock.

Then peak up on that.

Good job, by the way!

And, when you've done that, update the stored TPs to correlate with the listings at Post #3 and scan again.

Or, bin the lot and use Auto/Blind Scan

You should get more than 600 channels, unless you specified to scan FTA only, in this case encrypted channels would not be added to the list.
