Back in the UK and missing Cyprus!!!

Hi

I've just bought a Pace 2600c1 on ebay.co.uk which the seller claims has a Faulty tuner, item number is 5767793133. Does anyone know where I can obtain new tuners to fit myself or a cheap service engineer that will do the job for me? I've posted this on digital spy and they have come up with www.mces.co.uk who will fix it for £37. However, before I send it to them is there anyone in Cyprus that can supply a tuner or fix it cheaper.

Thanks

Nick

£37 is not a bad quotation for a tuner replacement...I suggest you go ahead and send it to them for repair...I doubt you will find anyone in Cyprus to do it anywhere near that price...

Who ever told you that might have been refering to the North part of the island, which is cheaper in many aspects ;)

How did the repair go with www.mces.co.uk?

I also need a repair, I have been quoted £60 in Cyprus which is OK but seeing as I paid £60 for the box I'd rather see if there is a cheaper option.

What are delivery charges like?

Thanks

As my friend maniacop said the tuner repair was a good one and cost as per the quote - however by the time you add postage both ways & VAT etc then there may not be that much in it! PM me if you need anymore info/help.

Cheers

If you're quite sure it's the tuner (unlikely!), and can easily get a new one, then repair is fairly simple (but tedious).

Access underside of circuit board, remove solder from around tuner module pins using a "solder sucker" (or solder wick), pull out faulty tuner module, push in new one, and re-solder pins.

Be careful not to damage circuit board tracks, especially when pusing through the pins on new module.

Then, no "adjustments" are needed, so in theory the receiver should work again! But, it's all at your own risk!

From the same place (www.mces.co.uk). You need the ZIF tuner, on special offer, I believe.

Actually its the scart(TV) that does not work, I have sound but no video. I have tried different cable, and I had the same result, I tried another digibox with both cables and that was fine so Im pretty sure the scart socket is faulty. Is this an easy job to do? Could you talk me through it?

If you're getting sound but no video then it isn't the tuner.

Are both scart sockets giving the same problem? If the VCR socket is OK then it's possible that the digibox is switched to RGB output on the TV socket and your TV doen't support it.

You could try tuning in to the signal on the TV aerial output socket. You definitely won't get sound (output is PAL I with a different sound channel spacing to the rest of Europe) but you might get vision. If so, this is clue as to where the problem lies.

If I plug in the scart from my TV into the VCR scart socket on the digibox it gives me a picture but its red. I know my tv supports RGB output, apart from being a new model, I had my previous digibox setup to output RGB and it was fine with my screen. Im pretty sure the scart socket is faulty.

ok, then, it's certainly not the tuner!

In the UK, spare tuners (various models) were available from www.cpc.co.uk . Maybe not any longer. Also, possibly, from www.grandata.co.uk .

Ouside UK, "officially", digiboxes aren't used (!), so getting spares locally could be a problem!

It's getting too deep and dirty for my limited knowledge. Try wiggling the scart plug in the socket. If this makes a difference then it may be down to faulty/dry soldering. Beyond this I have to hand over to others.

There are further things you could try (basically, what PaulR just said, but "expanded"!).

1) First, make quite sure the SCART lead is ok, try it on something else feeding into your tv set, eg a video recorder. Make sure you're using RGB, not PAL composite! If now satisfactory, try "jiggling" both plugs, both with the "known good" device, and then with the digibox.

2) Try other SCART socket.

3) Each time, make sure both SCART plugs on lead are very firmly pushed all the way in (because they pull out very easily!).

4) Make sure no other equipment is on the same SCART connection, either via a cheap (directly wired) SCART connecting box, or an expensive (electronic switching) one, since you can get conflicting signals from different devices.

5) If no joy so far, try getting picture via box rf out into tv aerial socket, by "sweeping" through the tv channels. Although Cyprus PAL I is slightly different to UK PAL G in bandwidth, and you won't get any sound, the uhf channels used are the same, as is the chrominance offset frequency, and neg modulation vsb, etc, so at least in theory you should get some sort of picture. You might have to tune tv set away from "channel centre frequency".

6) If you've now got a picture, then a faulty SCART socket (one or both) was probably the actual fault. However, now make sure digibox is also set to RGB, (which might possibly fix it).

7) If still no SCART, but rf picture is acceptable, you could use that and get sound from SCART via external amplifier.

Not all TVs work with the Digibox RGB output, have you tried switching it to PAL Composite?

I have been quoted £60 to have it repaired in Cyprus, the bloody box cost me less than that, so I begurdge paying that to have it fixed. it defeats the object of getting cheap in the first place, but you know theold saying " you pay peanuts, you get monkeys"
