Sky dish with 2 cables looks like 80cm dish. (just moved in). I have two cables into house. Panasonic 50" Plasma with Freesat

Hi there,

I have just moved into a house that has a sky dish (80cm oval grey with 2 Cables from LN:cool:. Last night I thought as my TV has freesat built I would try to connect one of the cables to the TV. I did this and did a auto setup on the Freesat tuning. It found the Astra 2 satellite and began the retuning. It found over 140 channels and then asked to put in my postcode. It then said regional setting could be found, please try again. I tried this with different postcodes but it kept saying no signal despite having 10/10 on signal quality and strength. Is this something else I should be doing. It shows up all the programs in the Extensive Freesat EPG guide but not one channel will work. Its not an issue if it doesnt work, just thought I would give it a try. Many thanks. Matt

What's the model number?
Try a simple version of your postcode using 1aa, for example ne1 1aa. Also ne1 on its own works on my old freesat box for my region.
It's possible it's a sky Q lnb which won't work properly with your tv.
Is there a manual tune option? Can you tune 11.426h 27500 2/3? I believe that's the freesat home transponder.

When it's tuning do you recognise the channels it's finding? It's possible the dish is pointed at another satellite. You say it's an '80 cm oval', does it look like a sky dish (wider than tall)? If it's not a sky dish it's more likely it's pointing elswhere.

Thank you for the fast reply.

Its a panasonic TX-P50GT30B Plasma TV. The Sky dish is grey oval shaped. with a Sky LNB with two cables coming out. When tuning I recongise all the channels as they come up when you change channel. It shows good signal strength on the channels too, but then says no signal. This happens on all channels. When doing using the option for other sat channels. It finds quite a few channels but the only two that are available to watch are Euronews and Skynews. It also locks into Astra 2 when setting up on Freesat

Many thanks

Matt

On the lnb how many outputs are there? If there are only two then it's probably a sky q lnb.

When you say sky & euronews are the only channels to watch, are the other channels that don't work UK channels?

There are the only two channels that appear on the guide after tuning into other sats. On Freesat epg shows loads but none are available to watch

Sounds as if you need to change the LNB for a legacy Sky one (A Quad, in practice).

You are seeing the Freesat Default Transponder serendipitously, but the tuner doesn't know how to relate to the Sky Q LNB.

I would take a quality image of the LNB and post here first, it would be out of the ordinary to have a Q type LNB on an 80cm dish, moreso in South UK.
If it does turn out to be a modern LNB, then a DSCR switch behind the TV would potentially be a cheaper and less risky fix.

Thank you. What do I need to get to change over the LNB (apart from a ladder ). Is it just a case of changing it over or do I need an engineer ?

A posidrive screwdriver, and a "magic" marker to mark on the LNB clamp on the dish as to where the "0" degrees line on the existing LNB lines is set on it so that you can set the "0" degree line on the replacement LNB to the same angle (the "skew") - AND someone to hold the ladder steady whilst you are up it (!)

An 11mm open-ended spanner will probably be necessary to undo the "F-connectors" on the old LNB and then tighten them on the new one.

Thank you. So all need is a replacement LNB ? Is there a specific model type I am looking for. Can it be an ebay job ?

Sure you'll be able to get one from ebay but take a photo of your existing dish & upload it here first, there are several versions of sky dishes and the lnbs aren't always interchangeable.

Also what frequency do sky news & euronews say they are on?

Hi there, Please see attached two pics of the dish and LNB that is currently on the wall of the house.

Sky News is showing the following :
Signal Strength 10
Signal Quality 10
Bit Error 0.00E+0
Satellite : Astra 28.2E
Frequency 12261 Mhz, H, 27500 S/s

Euronews
Signal Strength 10
Signal Quality 9
Bit Error 0.00E+0
Satellite: Astra 28.2E
Frequency 10805Mhz, H, 22000 S/s

Hope that helps

Thanks

Matt

"Sky" embossed on the LNB housing, and two outputs, gives the game away.

Wideband LNB as used for Sky Q.

Needs swapping out with a Quad with Mk IV fitting @c.£15 (or qv Channel Hopper's alternative solution).

FWIW, that's a Sky "Zone 2" dish, not that it makes any difference w.r.t. the LNB - slighly unusual in the Southern UK, but not unknown (and what I use in W.London) because it gives more reliable reception in heavy rain/show etc.

Hi there

What is a DSCR Switch, and how would I connect it ?

They are used for Quatro LNB's The DSCR is a multi switch I believe for running several receivers from the one dish.

How would that help me with getting freesat to work with my current dish as Channel Hopper has recommended

I was just answering you DSCR question.
