I have a couple of the ODUs that came with Viasat/Prodelin dishes. One is the single cable and the other a 2 cable (TX&RX). The polarisation switching is interesting. It has a solenoid buried deep inside. I never found a way of using them as they seem to need complex control from the IDU - unless someone knows otherwise. If anyone wants one or both, let me know.

The manual in your link is interesting.

This has no link with Prodelin as far as I can see, it's a metal reflector and the feed has removeable cap.

All bolts/nuts/threads and heads are metric which suggests European design/build

Mine came from a commercial VSAT user. The dishes are Prodelin/GD 3122 but with customised feed arms and support tray to suit the Viasat ODU (which is very heavy). Your dish mount looks the same as that supplied with the SES dishes that come with Gilat ODUs.

This reflector is about 80cm and I assume 40dB gain at Ka receive frequency which is just what I was looking for to start experimenting (it's also not been bent -too much :D )

Having a spare hour in bed this morning or using it for something constructive? Decisions.

Constructive won so armed with nothing more than a small torx driver and a set of cheap feeler gauges, I was able to pop the top off the ODU. the next posts should assist in a Yorkshireman's foray into Ka band.

The ODU protective lid is held together with just two screws and some sealant that can be taken off with nothing more than the tools mentioned. Be careful though as the alloy lid is razor sharp along the edge.

Some of the more pertinent markings and components, including a lovely solenoid system as mentioned earlier, with olde school reed switches, which could hold the key to enabling just the receive only part to operate when powered up.

Not that I will take the ODU further apart currently, I will power up later in the week to see which way the relay moves during ‘setup’ but the sealant that is covering the internal components is even easier to peel off than the white stuff, coming away cleanly.

If I can get the ODU to power up in receive only mode, the hope is that alteration of feed to the opposite polarity (by nothing more than drilling out two holes in the ODU casing at 90 degrees to the existing ones) will allow enthusiasts slightly closer to the west coast a chance to receive Saorsat for around £50.

The following link has information on the various Ka satellites above Europe and the characteristics of the reception.

KA Band satellites in Europe

Within the permitted footprints, those with a '56' and -potentially- a 'c' in the description could be in reach with small modifications to the feed components only.
