Im using a splitter to run a signal up to a Bedroom TV and it works perfectly when the TV downstairs is turned on, however once that TV is turned off a No signal sign appears on the bedroom TV. Ive tried an inline Amp (in many positions along the cable) and Ive tried switching the two out cables on the splitter, to no avail. Has anyone heard of this before????

What happens if you unplug the cable supplying the downstairs tv ?

Hi Gary, welcome to the forum.

Can you explain your system in more detail? Like what sort of splitter are you using? What equipment do you have besides the TVs? Is it the aerial signal, or is it a cable coming from a dish? Are there satellite receivers or Freeview boxes in there somewhere?

If it is the satellite signal from a dish then a splitter will not work,
What you need is a twin or quad output Lnb,

Splitters are mainly used for TV Aerials.

Hi there,

I am running a cable from the sat dish to the main TV (built in free view) which I have split using a Hama 22146 splitter (pictured) to run a cable up to a bedroom to a TV (built in free view). Does this help?

I would try another splitter as a first step.

I think the upstairs tv has lnb power turned off. You cant have both tvs trying to control at same time.
If you turn lnb power on upstairs you cannot use both at the same time though.

To be a little more clear:

With the information you give, I believe you have two TVs with sat-tuners built in.
They are connected to a single coax-cable from the dish by means of the splitter.
The LNB in front of the dish needs to be powered as well as controlled to select the right frequency band, and the so-called polarisation.
This is done by the receiver, in your case the downstairs TV.
If two TVs are connected at the same time, they might interfere with each other.
I think whoever installed your system has turned off the "power and control signals" on the second TV.
This means that when the downstairs TV is turned off, the LNB is not activated (no power), and you have no reception.
It also means that the upstairs tv will have a limitation in the channels it can see, as the downstairs TV "selects" what frequency band and polirisation that the LNB will be looking at.

You can check if this is case by going into the configuraiton settings on your TVs, and see if there is an option to turn on/off LNB power.
If it is off upstairs, and on/missing downstairs, then that's pretty likely to be the case.
Of course, this is all qualified guessing - there may be something else wrong.

But If it is the case, then (as william-1 points out) the best solution is to swap to a dual or quad LNB, and run more cables directly to upstairs bedroom from the LNB.
Compromise could be something called a stacker, which allows two signals to be sent on one cable, provided your existing cabling is good enough.
Or you could just live with the way it is now - even through it can be impractical to have to turn on downstairs just to watch something upstairs...

Instead a splitter , a priority switch will do , cheap and simple , no extra cable needed .

There is another way that I have set up several times:-

Use the outlet F connector from Sat Box-1 & loop to Sat Box-2 leaving Sat Box-1 on standby when you view Sat Box-2,

Works ok for people who live alone otherwise fit a twin output Lnb so that both boxes can be viewed independently

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!

I think he is referring to something like this Wentronic 51445-GB Smart Priority Switch - got 3x of those in a box in the garden to allow both the downstairs lounge receiver(s) and the upstairs "office" receivers to take control of the LNBs on the dishes at the end of the garden as required (FWIW, they work fine with DiSEqC switches and the USALS dish mount).

This setup will not work, you need a separate coax from the LNB to the second TV, or a 4x4 Diseqc switch, (they don't make a 2x2 switch) this would allow both TV's to be connected and let them work at the same time.

The splitter shown is trying to supply DC power from both TV's to the LNB at the same time, this is not possible, not without a very special synchronous power supply in both TV's, one TV will always have a higher DC voltage output to the LNB then the other, this will cause one TV's tuner to shut down the signal input to avoid damage.

Well,
-you swapped the cables ~ no difference
-you pulled out the power plug of your other receiver ~ no difference (so no power interference by possible 'standby LNB voltage' of that receiver)

that means that no power comes from your bedroom receiver to the splitter.
Have you checked that LNB power is turned on in the receiver menu, as suggested by @st1 ?
Otherwise your cable has a DC blockage somewhere: some splitter or connection box that doesn't pass DC (but you don't have that?), or your cable has a bad contact (possibly the outer part of the cable not making good contact to the F-plug?).

So I would check the F-plugs, and maybe test continuance of the cable with a multimeter (or with light and battery).

BTW I find your setup with this splitter quite normal, when you accept the limitations in use (you cannot watch all programms, independantly, at both receivers).
With simultaneous use of both receivers, there might occur a control problem sometimes, due to non-synchronous 22kHz signal though. (There are ways to workaround this problem, but they are not 'nice' solutions: not really meant to be.)

That disadvantage doesn't happen with a priority switch as mentioned by @Trust1 , though that could have the disadvantage of reduced signal on some frequencies at the slave receiver, with simultaneous use of both receivers.

But after the above tests: changing the splitter wouldn't solve your problem, I guess.
