A friend wants to put in a small washbasin in a toilet which has never had one fitted previously.

Are there fittings that will allow the waste to run into the main outlet from the toilet, as I've never worked on something like this before.
The only other option it seems is routing (some 6+ metres) the waste to the nearest sink outlet in the kitchen, through a hallway.

Yes, easy if the soilpipe is plastic. Just need adaptors as shown here -

Is the soil pipe plastic?

And a few traps in the pipe from the sink to the soil pipe- don't want any stinky air to escape and poison you.

I think mine runs into a rainwater hopper (as with the shower waste)- dunno if this is legal under modern regs but it has been like that for 30 years at least.
Could be worth checking out as a possibility - especially if it is more convenient than going into toilet outlet.

Thanks , the nearest rainwater drain is further than the kitchen (and the toilet is on the third floor)

Pity about that - it was only a thought - I guess there is nothing in any convenient downspout and nothing in the way of nearby other outlets you could follow, so toilet output it must be. The sink option you mention sounds impossible.

My hopper is on 2nd floor level about halfway down downspout (I suspect to put in an "air break" in downspout as well as a collecting opportunity for grey water wastes) so I am fairly lucky there and my upstair wastes just go straight out of the wall into that. It was fairly easy to change the manky looking white pipes for a smarter black lot a couple of years ago. :)

Good luck with the project - dont forget the gas mask when you cut into toilet waste! :)
