Hi,

I have a problem receiving hellas 39e, I purchased a bulsat card about a month ago thinking I would be able to pick up the signal easily but I have tried with a sky dish on the wall, 70cm dish and a 1.2m dish in the garden & three different receivers (Dreambox, Echolink and Ferguson) but I just cant pick up the signal.

Iv tried lowering the elevation a couple of degrees lower than 28.5e still with no luck with any of the dishes.

I seem to have a clear line of sight as when the dish is pointing to astra 28.5 the dishs is pointing quiet away from the wall with no obstacles in the way.

Im located in oxford uk.

I would appreciate any help as its driving me crazy

Hellasat is booming in here on my 85cm Penta dish :D

I can also get it on my 60cm dish so dish size isn't the problem.

Your not that far away from me so you should be able to get Hellasat with no problems at all

It might sound daft but the elevation for 39e may be lower than you think.

I would set your TV & receiver up near the dish where you can see it.
Pick a transponder frequency to use. You will find them here :D

_http://www.lyngsat.com/hellas2.html

Set up the receivers inbuilt signal meter and then slowly move the dish to the left (From behind the dish from Sky UKs sat position) keeping any eye on the signal meter.

If you go all the way and see no change in the signal, lower the elevation and sweep the arc again :-righton

When you do get a lock you will know as there aren't any other sats in that area that use a symbol rate of 30000 :toke:

Also get a lock on a Zone 1 but 60cm Minimum.

MegaB, start off at Astra2 28e and confirm you have a signal from this bird. Then 1/ first drop the dish elevation a tad, 2/ apply more skew to the LNb (approx -27.0°) and 3/ swing the assembly round to the East slowly whilst monitoring frequency 12.606h, 30000, 5/6 until you have a lock on this transponder. Scan and if correct you should have the following channels - ERT World, ANT1 etc.

Turksat 3A 42E ;)

Uses it since the tp were reconfigured last year.

MegaB - the 39E is much lower than you will be expecting - the dish face will probably need to be tipped forward somewhat.

Might give you an idea of dish elevation.
Just rigged up, example shown - Zone 1 on 39e not far from Oxford.

Thanks guys for all your help, I really appreciate it, thanks satman for the pic that really helped, after 3 weeks I got a glimmer of hope, with the minidish at the bottom of the garden I managed to get 3% signal lol but then I lost it. So Im thinking about putting one of the bigger dishes their.

But before I do, is a signal of 3% for hellas normal on a minidish or is something blocking it.

3% is nothing - you would probably get that from the noise level in the cable!

See if you can find the Uzbek channel on 40E - thats nice and strong

I tried uzbek but I couldnt get any signal, I then connected the ferguson and it said 5% signal and I scanned the transponder and it tuned in Ert world and a few others 4e, vouli etc, the picture is constantly breaking up but at least I found it :-worship. If I put the 70cm dish their would it pick up a good signal or is 5% too small for the minidish

Thank you all again, maybe now I get to watch my card :-rock

Have you adjusted the twist (skew) of the lnb - it will need to be twisted round anticlockwise a fair way

Well done in finding 39E - half the battle is complete now :D

A bigger dish will give you a better signal

Yes a zone1 minidish isn't big enough for 39e to give a reliable signal. A Zone2 minimum would be ok but would favour 70cm -80cm.

Correctly aligned, this size dish should give a massive signal from this bird.

I put the 1.2m dish where the minidish was getting 5% signal and Im gettin 100% signal on all bulsat transponders :-bighappy but on the hd channels I have a varying signal between 65-85% through the day, hopefully it will keep the pic during the rain. Thanks so much for all the advice :-respekt

Hi friends ..
sorry to butt in ..
Does anyone know roughly how many degrees of twist are needed for approx correct skew on a fixed dish pointing at Hellas ?
I have exactly the same arrangement ie a 66 cm ancient astra dish ...which has been repositioned and pressed back into service after 15 years of non use ...

My problem is that I cannot see a receiver as I peak the reception ...as my dish is 2 houses away ..on my dads back wall ..
approx 30 mtres away.
Im about to fit a new lnb ...as I now have the dish correctly aligned on 39E ...
I would like to maximise the signal ...so the skew is important.

Will do the job for you.

Please excuse all the guff in the Satlex link - Obviously you just enter your own position, dish size etc. and Bob is your Auntie.

Job done ...
signal now booming in on all transponders ..
Just a quick tip ..
Having no reference on my lnb for skew related ajustment ..
Here's what I did ..
Calculated the required skew at Satlex to be 25.5 deg (twist required anticlockwise as you look at the lnb throat )...
I first drew a vertical line on the lnb's throat cover ..
I now have vertical reference .. zero deg
drew a circle of about the same size on tissue paper ..
Sub divide it with a crosss to give 90 deg
sub divide again to show 45 deg
and again to show 22.5 deg

Draw a line on the paper at 22.5 deg and guestimate another approx to 25 deg ..
By holding the tissue paper against the lnb cap I can rotate the lnb to line up the marks

Splendid bit of creative thinking there!

I'm surprised there is no datum mark of any kind - all my LNBs have marks or graduations enabling setting to the Top Dead Centre annotation on the collar (Which is what you'd expect).
