hi,

decided on my system which is a 85cm transparent box, v box and h-h motor.! have made a bracket at work and got my scaffold pole so i am nearly set, but having problems already before i start!!

i not sure about compass reading, but have pointed my compass in line with where my mini dish is pointing at its reading on my compass roughly 150, east being 90 and west being 270, atra i thought was 28 degrees east, how does this match up with my 150ish reading??

a bit worried now as my mount is designed for where i thought was the best position so i could get a good view of the southern sky, (ie on my compass east to west) but to me the astra sat is pointing more to south than east?

can anyone shed any light??

That's correct spuey
28 deg East of South:D which is 152 degrees on your compass

@ spuey

By "85cm transparent box" I presume you mean 85cm transparent dish?
The magnetic North Pole is somewhere in North Canada at present, the offset for UK is 4-6 degrees.
Use http://satlex.de/en/azel_calc-first_1.html for checking look angles for satellites from your location.

edit
It appears that I was a little low in my estimation of the magnetic offset, see http://www.geo-orbit.org/sizepgs/magmapsp.html. .

Remember the difference between magnetic & true north/south changes over the years and the charts for 1996 are now out of date.

A good average for the UK this year is about 3° - which as mentioned above is a midges watsits. In about 20 years it will be zero - installers heaven.

hi,

cheers for your answers, understand the jist of it better now,

next problem...

installed my pole on the bracket set the pole level...

went to assemble the motor on the dish...mounted the antenna mounting tube on the mount...it states in the book that the two nut and bolts which hold the tube to the mount should be at ninety degrees when the mount is set to the manufactures setting of 0.. mine is set to zero on the guage but the bolt which goes through is about 45 degrees and the tube is about the same when its bolted...its as if its been drilled incorrectly making the pole sit a forty five degrees rather then straight when its set to zero, i am i missing something or do you reckon its faulty?

its a jaeger smr/smo-99g.

cheers

ps...yea its a transparent dish 85cm.. any idea about what the offset will be of the dish??

yea it looks like that but the pole looks like its turned about forty five degrees but it has not because the guage is set to zero on the mount, can not mount it straight as the holes are drilled in the shaft allready

if that makes sense

hi,

after a full afternoon on this baby i am still no father to getting it installed!!

i still cant find thor or any other sat for that!

the motor i am using is a jaegger 99G.

it states the angle of the mount is my elevation angle which is 52 degrees.

i have set this, set the motor to zero, put elevation of the dissh so it looks roughly vertical, put it on my pole which its vertical, pointed it south. when setting my reciever up i have selected sinle input lnb and selected thor from the menu system, then gone to the signal metre on the reciever, it says there thor which is right but then gives you loads of transponder options,
(does is matter which one is selected?) i then adjust my dish elevation angle and left and right and not a dicky bird!!

these are the points i cant get my head round...

1..the reciver meter menu page on my reciver does it matter which transponder you choose with the chosen sat?

2..will the elevation of a dish pointing at say thor be less or more than one pointing at say astra??

3...the dish is overlooking the apex of my garage roof...on a longish pole..just wondering if its high up enough for the signal to clear the roof, what angle does the signal come down as to clear the roof? (preety sure it is though)

any info appreciated...

if not gonna have to call the professionals

You need to select a transponder which can be received from your location, see the sticky at the top of the forum.

The elevation for thor will be several degrees higher than Astra from the UK.

The elevation of a sat like Thor, is something like 30 degrees, so more than one in two gradient.

Phil all you did sounds actually pretty good and in fact it should work. Perhaps a couple of things to check like:

I looked up your motor and it is a one I have never seen before and a bit different like the other ones. Does not mean it is bad just different and perhaps needs a different setting. It is made for Offset dishes and Prime focus dishes as I saw. Well perhaps you know prime focus dishes have to face a satellite directly. Is there something you might have to switch on the motor and it is currently on a prime fotos setting perhaps ? No idea if this really exists becuase I would assumne this is more a dish issue but you never know.

Do you have a manual of this motor ? Because perhaps you cannot use the longitude directly on the evaluation scale and it needs a correction on the motor. Does it say in the manual. So it is not perhaps 52 degrees because your motor has a long trunk which goes up.

My motor has the trunk downwards and has two scales. I could choose either latitude or the correction of the motor which I picked up in the manual. Latitude in my case was 48 and the motor correction was something like 42 or less. So what I mean make sure the scale is really the latitude and not any motor correction degree.

Something else. You right "i then adjust my dish elevation angle and left and right and not a dicky bird". I would hope you actually did lift and lower the mirror and did not do side movements.

Besides did your motor actually turn when you moved it to Thor. Normally the receiver has to support this and you have to put in your coordinations in the setup. If not you would have to search for Thor manually first by moving the dish and store the position so it can be used later. In this case it makes it more difficult for the first time setup because you have to find the proper azimut first for the motor. So you have to have the proper motor setting first.

Cheers

trying to drive the dish with the auto sat scan...bloomin dish wont move on its own...tried all settings in motor setup etc but it wont have it...can move it manually from the reciever through the v box and the motor, but wont do it in auto!!!
