MOD CHIPS ILLEGAL IN THE UK
------------------------------------------------------------
British High Court has ruled that selling, advertising,
possession for commercial use and even use of PS2 mod chips
is illegal in the UK. The ruling was based on UK's
implementation of the notorious EUCD legislation that UK
implemented to its national legislation, virtually without
consumer friendly amendments, back in October 2003. The
European Union Copyright Directive legislation makes it
illegal to sell or distribute tools that allow circumventing
technical copy protection mechanisms.

The ruling was made against a Briton, David Ball, who sold
1,500 Messiah 2 PS2 mod chips in the UK. Mod chips are
basically hardware modifications to games consoles that
allow playing imported games, game backups, self-made
software and, obviously, pirated games. Many Linux
distributions and media player tools require mod chips to be
installed in order to run the software.

Blast! When's the PS3 due?

There must be hundreds of thousands of mod chips installed in this country in various gadgets.

That's another prison-full of under 16's then...

Pretty soon, there won't be a person alive who isn't a wanted criminal.

Good job the powers that be are focusing on the right stuff. I'd hate to think they were wasting time on drug dealers, child mature content peddlers, gun-toting gangsters and psycho wife beaters.

Next it'll be CD/DVD-writers....

Could be the slippery slope, it's amazing how much clout these large corporations have. :)

We'll all be buying our titanium cards with a door locking mechanism soon.

If you have a door and its not locked, in the UK, you have the problem with something called squatters running the risk of gaining full access to your property, and having full rights to abuse your castle.

Problem is, if you keep your home open for any people/animals that really are in need of shelter, how does one deal with the problem of returning to a new lock on the door with a rather complicated brass mechanism to get in ?
