With Sky you have no option but to buy the Sky+ Nenni, as you cannot buy an appropriate NDS CAM.

If you have the family package, then you will pay £10/month, so it is worth upgrading to one of the £32 packages where it is free.

The only fly in the ointment would appear to be this clause in the Sky+ contract conditions, even if it is somewhat ambiguous.

You must keep your telephone line (which must be fixed and operational) connected to your Sky+ Set Top Box for at least 12 months from installation (if installed by Sky) and at all times during your minimum period.

Sorry for the OT: Great that somebody from Iceland writes :)

Nenni i would like to know if there are DXers around in Iceland, you know these crazy people with motorised huge dishes. If so i am very curious what can be received there. I heard there is also a chance to get some US/Canada transmissions. Is there any icelandic satellite-forum around ?

Greetings, Chris :)

HI m8! Well most of us are using 1,25 or 1,5m dishes and motorized systems. I have 1,5m Fracarro on my chimney and I use it on Astra2 Arabsat - Astra1 - Hotbird - Sirius and Thor. These are the main satellites used here in Iceland.
I dont think there are any real nut cases here yet and I havn't heard of anyone getting neither US nor Canadian transmissions...

And yes there is an Icelandic satelite forum on the Icelandic Satellite info website skrifa.com(in Icelandic by the way)
So if you want to see some funny letters... you are more than welcome:)

Thanks a lot for the quick reply Nenni. I've just registered there and see you are the Admin :)

Would you please tell me just this only:
Am i allowed to post there in english and if yes in which section ? You must know that i don't understand icelandic but was always on the search for such a forum as i do also for other countries all over the world just to understand how far beams reach and how quickly some frequencies fall in signal quality moving out of the official footprint. Since the satellites, frequencies, dish diameters and equipment is written in english this should be no problem to find out. That's how i do for example in a finnish forum or in several russian, bulgarian, romanian, former YU, turkish ones. More difficult it is in fora that don't use latin chars like iranian and thai.
That's it for the moment. Thanks again and see you there :)

You are also very welcome to the greek satellite forum of http://www.sdtv.gr/ .

Does this mean that you can't use any DVD recorder with hard drive to record programs from Sky and can only use the Sky+ box?

The contract conditions you quote talk about the installation being done by Sky. What happens if you buy a Sky+ box from somewhere like Dixons and install it yourself? Does it still have to be connected to a phone line to work?

I think if you buy from a chain store like dixons, they get sky to come round and install it.you should go to an independant sat dealer(sky authorised) who can activate it in his own shop.

Well, that might be a bit difficult since I don't live in the U.K.

I know, but you asked"What happens if you buy a Sky+ box from somewhere like Dixons and install it yourself?".
Unless you have a friend/relative who can get it for you. :-)

I have the possibility to buy the Sky+ box in the UK and bring it over to NL, where I live. My brother was in a Dixons branch the other week and made some enquiries for me. They would be willing to sell me the box without installation, and I have an installer over here. I've had a sat setup with the FTV card for about 2 years and am thinking of upgrading it to the Family Packet from Sky through a relative in the UK.

It's the phone line I'm worried about though. I've heard about redialers but I don't think it would work because we have an ISDN phone line. I really wanted the possibility to record programs from Sky but think I'll have to give it a miss.

If its possible, you can take your box and redialler to someone who has a sky set up but not on ISDN,connect to their dish and phone line and activate your card, then connect back to your dish. :-)
