Recently installed (DIY) Motorised Dish 1 Metre with a Palcom DSL 2100 receiver. Hoping to make use of the forum and contribute later when I'm up and running. Currently getting the main satellites Atlantic Bird 3 5 West, Thor 1 West., Hotbird, Astra 19 and Astra 2 28.2.

Trying without success to get some in-between satellites such as Amos at 4 West, and Nilesat at 7 West.

I would welcome any information on which satellites are available from South County Dublin, (53 degrees North).

Although this post is streets ahead at my stage in this interest I am looking forward to replies from the more experienced or similar newbies for an exchange of hints or tips.

Most receivers come pre-programmed with all or most of the positions between 45e and 45w, see if they are listed or hidden in the menus.

Also some of these birds require a big dish, I am in Ireland and can not pick up some of the more out of the way birds.

Thanks Razor for the quick reply. I'm in South County Dublin.

The Palcom (Digenius) receiver has listed pretty well all the channels from 68 East to 45 West and I have locked in on quite a few.

One glitch is that I downloaded the latest Firmware to the receiver and the German/English manual for the receiver no longer fully matches the latest on screen instructions.

The missing piece of information is for example, can I pick up Telecom 2A at 3 degrees Eest on a 1 metre dish here in Dublin? At present I have Sirius at 5 degrees East strong and clear and Thor at 1 degree West just as strong. But can't fix on Telecom 2A. The manual's English version is thin on instructions and my left a bit right a bit is not finding any signal strength to do a meaningful channel search. Perhaps it's not possible to get Telecom 2A.

Hopefully there are other Irish Sat enthusiasts who are experimenting with a new set-up or have met the same problems.

I will search the Forum as well as rechecking my installation for levels and tilt etc to make absolutely sure I'm bang on.

Thanks again.

Go to www.lyngsat.com and look for a channel in clear at 3e. Manually input it's parameters and then do a search.

Best of luck.

An update on the I metre motorised dish setup in South County Dublin.

At present am restricted on the full swing East to West but can obtain strong and clear 28.2 East (the BBC free to air) to 30 West Hispasat Strong and clear. In between I have Thor I West strong signal 70%, Sirius East 8% Eutelsat W1 at 10 East and the usual excellent signals from Hotbird and Astra.

Cannot yet fix on Amos at 4 West or the in betweeens at 3 East.

This may be a newcomer's unfamiliarity with the Palcom 2100 DSL and will be hoping to get immediate help from a fellow sat user soon.

Anyone out there with a Palcom 2100 DSL and similar issues? Would welcome an exchange of experiences with the minutiae of this particular reeceiver.

Thanks

You probably won't be able to get AMOS. If you go to lyngSat and look at the various packages available, you will see a column labelled BEAM. This shows the transponder footprint. AMOS is aimed at eastern europe and the middle east.

Thanks to all for the info on Amos et al.

Have rechecked the dish and absolutely set the axel mount dead level. Coincidence or not but I am now getting Hispasat at 30 West with a rake of channels, all with strong signal and crystal clear. I have Taquilla 1 to 10 but 12, 13, 14 and 15 are temporarily off the air. Also beaming in C Deporte 1, 2 and 3 and Golf + and lots of Spanish and Portuguese Feature film channels. Some slow to kick in but almost all with an audio option to switch to the English language version.

Coming back into I degree West at Thor I have Atlantic Bird at 5 Degrees West with Globecast at 12543 H 27.5K and FEC 3/4 loud and clear. Still cannot get Nilesat At 7 West.

Much better luck East with Sirius2/3 Astra 1a Eutelsat W3 at 7 East, Eutelsat at 10 East but only two channels Antena 1 on 11,024 V 5,632 FEC 3/4 and TGRT 11,054 V 4,375 FEC 5/6.

About to try for the feeds beyond 30 East and will report any success.

The Palcom receiver is really fast on searching and outstrips my old Nokia 9800s. The menu system is not as flexible as the Nokia with just one long listing but the speed outweighs the disadvantage.

Regards to all.

Seems to be going well Diarmuid. Nilesat at 7 west would probably need a 1.2m dish which, I guess, is why you didn't pick anything up.

Brilliant report Diarmuid, Nice to see things going well for you. Not too many people in Dublin picking up what you are, and even fewer in Co. Laois. In the middle of a system upgrade myself, when I’m all sorted we can compare, might put in slightly then 1m on the dish side of things. But if it goes as well as yours did, I will be happy.

I'd be interested if you can get all the channels on Thor at 1W? I believe some are harder to pick up than others - for example do you get NRK and DR1, which I think are the weaker signals.
Cheers

Thanks to all for tips and comparisons. Good to learn other experiences.

For a beginner it's impossible to know what is available without the cross-check. For example you say Nilesat probably needs a 1.2 metre. Now I know to stop wasting my time and move on a couple of degrees.

As I said before I'm limited to 30 West and about the same East at 28.2 East.

Lots in between but I may consider moving to a clearer site after Christmas. Afraid to lose so many good channels at present.

I have two main viewing interests - All sport and feature films better old than new!

On Hispasat I could only get about a dozen channels at first then absolutely levelled everything and hit the search button again to throw up about I think 200/300 channels virtually all coming in strong - the Canal + Sports range C Deporte's and about thirty film channels including Taquilla.

At 5 West I have Globecast and BRTV, in the clear but MCM Belgique is scrambled. Signal better than 80 per cent.

On Thor I have DR 1 and 2, TV Dan 1 & 2, Nordic TCM and all the Kiosk and Canal + Nordic channels perfect signals on all also JOJ and TA3. No NRK at all. I had SVT but it's off my screen at present.

Sirius is changeable as you indicated. I'm getting the hang of the single transponder search to expand the listed options on the receiver and on Sirius I pulled in TV 1000 2/3 Cinema 100 2/3 Ticket 1 and 2 but the signals are only about 50% and pixelating (hope that's spelt right!) The other FTA channels are very strong - about a dozen. I also have TV Sport RO very strong signal but no sound or picture - can't figure that.

On 7 East I have Tv 5 Orient OCCE, Globecast again,TVP Polonia all strong.

I'm happy on some transponders just to get the fix so I can hunt for Match feeds without delay on the day.

Delighted to hear how all of us on the island are doing and I can see that I may have to go bigger to get those on the edge.

If you want any transponder settongs symbol rates or the like just ask but I think you're all still ahead of me at this stage.

Would welcome news of channels received not mentioned here within my spread of the sky.

On another forum here I saw Razor wondering about a SAT Shop in Dublin. Electroplus is the only retail outlet I know and don't have too a great range. But you can buy some CAMs and fittings but no cards and a tight range of receivers. The best supplier I found was Tony Moore at www.Satellite Ireland.ie. He's knowledgeable and reliable and about the same as UK prices. Given that we're being ripped off on almost everything else it's refreshing to find that our interest area is still competitive.

Thanks all for the chat and the info.

Regards

Diarmuid
